My parents are going to Sweden, Norway & Finland this summer and would like to have use of a cell phone to make calls within those countries. How easy is it to get a pre-paid sim card to use in their GSM phone when they go from country to country? Are they readily available at most stores like they are in the US? Or are there pre-paid phones such as the ones offered by Virgin Mobile & Boost in the USA that are affordable?

I found this company http://www.telestial.com but I'm not sure if you pay a premium to get the SIM(s) from them and it sounds like they will need 1 card per country.

The other option I was thinking of (but it may be too confusing for them) was a WiFi Skype phone, but that is limited to open WiFi hotspots and the phones are about $150.

I don't now about scandinavia but the rest of europe seems to have a place to buy sim chips on every other corner. It shouldn't be that hard to find one in the airport they land in or any train station for that matter.

While any sim card for europe should work throughout europe, I do recomend one card per country depending on how much your parents will use the phone for in country calls. The rates for out of country calls in europe are insane.

Though aren't there some scandinavian members here that could better answer your question?

There shouldn't be a problem getting prepaid SIMs on the other side of the pond, but make sure the phone is unlocked - most US carriers have this nasty habit of locking their phones so it can only be used with their SIM card.

I'm trotting off to Italy next week and want to get a prepaid SIM card as well. I came across this site which seems to have some good info: http://www.prepaidgsm.net/

In any case, if your folks' mobile is unlocked and quad-band then they can probably use it and buy a prepaid SIM card. [Smile]

Italy is probably my favorite place to visit in the world. If you are in Rome the one thing you should absolutely not miss is the Borghese gallery. You'll have to buy tickets in advance and it is rather small, but the sculptures inside it are the most impressive pieces of artwork I have ever seen in my life.

Not sure if I'll have time to do that but I'll see what I can do. But thanks for the tip!
