I just got the chat added to mine. I'm pretty pleased. It's finally something that's simple enough for my mom to use. So I got to chat with her for the first time, which was really cool. And I like how it's just in the browser with your inbox, no need to download any chat client or anything.

I use gmail pretty often and that chat window pane was added today or this weekend. I love it! Makes everything so much easier.
I have another 100 left from what I can see. Here is mine....

Peebs, Double click on the name of the person you want to chat with. You can chat in the browser or press"pop out" to chat outside of the browser. It uses the basics rules of IM.
dragonman97: thanks hun

And exactly where would I find the names of people with whom I wish to chat?
/me hasn't used IMs before

Umm...you've never used AIM or ICQ?
There's supposed to be a 'Quick Contacts' list on the left. Something like this: http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/chat.html
I don't have it, so I can't say for sure. (Maybe just maybe you don't actually have it yet, and have been misled by the entrance page of Gmail?)

No. I've been on #joyoftech in IRC maybe twice and that's all the experience I have.
I don't have the Quick Contacts section in my Gmail homepage. Maybe I need to check the settings. I do definitely have Chat, it's listed beneath Starred.

Perhaps you don't actually have the chat feature in your account yet. There is googleTalk which is a seperate client that must be downloaded which has been around for sometime, and the chats are logged to your gmail account. So, if you see a button on the left that says chat, that does not necessarily mean that you have the built-in chat yet. When you do have the built-in chat, you'll be able to hover over anyone's name in a message or in your contacts, and a bubble will pop up that allows you to email or chat with this person. In your contacts, you will also be able to see if this person is available for chat, busy, idle, etc.

No, you don't have Chat. That's the place where your chat logs go. If you're using the Google Talk client (Windows), archives of your conversations will get placed there. I have the same folder/label, and I have seen conversations get archived there after using the official client.
You will have to wait until they activate the Chat feature for you, just like me. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I have 200 invites at the moment. And the chat feature is friggin' sweet. It just appeared for me today. Nice and easy. Click on the name and go.
