Yet another problem from the newbie here. Periodically (and lately almost every week) I will have to reboot my computer to get my printer to work properly. There will be an "X" over top of the printer icon in the tray. Nothing I do except reboot solves the problem. Anyone out there that can send some help this way?

Umm, what sort of printer? Does it help turning it off or on? Can you unload and reload the printer software to see if it redetects it? What about unplugging/replugging the USB cable (presuming it's a USB printer)?

It doesn't seem to me that you've tried very hard to solve this on your own.

Yes, I did all of those things either on my own or when I asked the techs at Earthlink.
Sorry to bother anyone, I thought this was for people to ask questions of those who have more experience with computers. My mistake.

Please don't be offended, it just makes it easier to solve the problem if you give us more information to go on. I assumed that you hadn't done all that, but I assumed wrong, it would seem.

Cathy,

First off this is my opinion. I would not use a Lexmark if someone held a gun to my head. Well maybe if there was a gun, but I would have to think about it. [Wink]

Have you tried to install an updated version of the Lexmark software? Tyhis may be an issue for that model(I don't know, personally). Also there may be a setting in your USB driver to use low power or to sleep when not in use. Right click on "My Computer" go to "Properties" Click the "Hardware" tab, Then "Device Manager." In the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and right click through all the instances. Find which one the printer is connected to. Then select "Power Management" there is a check box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to conserve power" Uncheck that.

Hopefully it helps. If it doesn't, get an HP printer. That will absolutely get rid of your troubles. [Big Grin]

Hey stick around a while and introduce yourself here.
What part of KY are you from? I was born in Pulaski Co. And spent my first 10 years around Lake Cumberland.

Thanks!!
Well, I'm female, what do you expect from hormonal imbalance?? Rationality??? Of course I took offense, but I'm way too sensitive sometimes!! [Embarrassed] I thought I put the Lexmark info in there, and yes, it would help to put details in the question, but again.....I plead female!! [Big Grin]
Anyway, I am a newbie with computers really. Had one for quite some time, but besides being able to find what me and everyone else wants on the internet, thats the extent of my "expertise". Even read the manuals! Well, there was no gun in my case about the printer...it was just the computer bundle I bought from (whisper) Dell.

Thanks for the help. When I can find a few minutes away from the grandbaby I am going to try it all.

Good luck.

I have plenty of kin out there from Russelville all the way up to Stanford. Though most of my immediate relatives are around Eubank.
