I just uncovered some of my old childhood favorites - Gizmos & Gadgets, Treasure Cove, The Incredible Machine, Spelunker (the caves of dr. somebody), etc., as well as some old nightmares (AOL 2.6, anybody?).

Does anyone know how early a Mac I can emulate with the Mac Classic mode in OS X? I know the progs ran on Mac 6.7, on an LC II, but I'm not sure how late a computer they would run on. Also, I don't have my Powerbook yet, so are there any quality emus for Windows or Linux y'all could recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Vmac does a very good job of emulating a Mac Plus (68000, I think it also includes 68020 emulation on some ports), and is available on a number of platforms including OS X, Windoze and various NIX flavours. See www.vmac.org

Basilisk emulates a Mac II with 68020, 68030 or 68040. See www.students.uni-mainz.de/bauec002/B2Main.html . Again, this is available for a number of platforms.

Both emulators will require a ROM image from the Mac being emulated (if you look not too hard, you can find naughty copies to be download from the internet), and a copy of Mac OS (old versions are downloadable from the Apple website).

Thanks guys! Anyone know what the official legality (US) is of downloading said ROMs if I still have my hard drive anyway? Not that I care, heh.
