I was watching a program about Beethoven on the telly the other day and thought I'd get some of his tunes. Now I'm pretty sure his work is out of copyright and therefore public domain. Googling led me to many pages with dead links, so I was wondering if any of you knew of any sites where I could download some free (as in beer and as in speech) tunes.

free mp3 downloads @ amazon.com. Their search shows 36 hits for Beethoven.

They do ask you to sign in, so you'll need an amazon account to access downloads.

Hmm. Not all are actually Beethoven, and it seems to be lacking the symphonies. I want the stuff that gets Alex and his droogs ready for some ultraviolence.

The problem here is although Beethoven's work is now in the public domain, the intepretations are not necessarily.

Anyway, I'd say go and buy a good CD set of the symphonies - they are definitely better enjoyed when sitting in the best chair of the house, on a good audio system filling the room with the beauty of this master's music. Call it the "Total Beethoven Submersion". Altough computer (and I would guess mp3 readers) would be fine, it's just not as great. And you can still rip the mp3 from the CDs (and control the quality of the output).

Ah yes, you want the Ninth. With a nice tall glass of milk.

Beethoven's Ninth got Alex and Co. pumped up, yet strangely enough it puts me to sleep.
