OS X 10.9 'Mavericks'
And it's a free upgrade.

What...did Apple get scared that ceiling cat was watching them? (And perhaps leaking secrets?)

Free, eh? I'll wait 'til ~10.9.1+, but it sounds interesting. I could use some free time to peruse ars' ~23 page article on it first, though. :/

I'm also a bit worried about upgrading - I'm running 10.6.8; 10.7 was awful IMHO (give me Save As...damnit!) and I just never got around to upgrading to 10.8 which seems better. I read on ars today that it's possible to make a bootable USB key with 10.9, and my gut says that a clean reload would be a good idea. (Plus, it might help get rid of cruft!)

Still no "Save as… " I miss it too.

And if you've ever made use of Labels in Finder, you're gonna hate how the file/folder is no longer colored… just gets a dot… or dots …multiple tags, you see.

Love tags, but I'd love to have labels too.

Progress… [Wink]

What?!?!

Oh...I'm very glad you pointed that out. I need to get 10.9 at work to try it out and learn more.

I'm arguably the last person to use the color label things, but I finally started using it a few years ago when sorting through folders full of pictures. Before I cherry pick my 'favorite' pictures in a batch, I often color them blue and the second-best yellow. At work, ever-worried that I might get sacked, I have all my empty/factory-standard folders (in /Users/dragon) grey, and the few that might need cleaning uncolored.

As for Save As...I thought I read that it got fixed/remedied in 10.8. My work laptop runs 10.7 (which I have little love for) and I never got around to upgrading to verify that for myself. Drat.

The color Labels are now called Tags. The idea of a tag is that a file could have multiple tags as it could be 1) a favorite picture but also 2) has you in it 3) from your San Francisco vacation and 4) from 2012 as you may have been there many times. Now you can search easily based on all those criteria.

Which is great…

Unless you've already been using Labels and have a bunch of files that now come up when you were only looking for vacation pics.

This is the first update I'm sitting out from until the next version comes out, or until I have a whole weekend with nothing to do. :-)

Joe Kissell scared me with his Mavericks Mail article. [Razz]

also, I imagine my 2008 Macs won't be a spring chicken on this thing.

/me skimmed that article and what I take from it is:
Apple Mail is a piece of garbage (which I've long since known) and if you used it before, and hacked your settings to play nice with Gmail, then it won't work very well with Gmail now that Apple Mail better supports the latter. In the RDF, that's probably read as "you shouldn't have used Apple Mail with Gmail until Mavericks because..." (um??).

I realize that's probably an unpopular position, but I've seen far too many bad things happen with Apple Mail (and I've made a few $$ consulting folks who had trouble with it) to ever use it. If I was going to use a mail client, it'd be Thunderbird or mutt. For work I use Outlook, but I find the Mac version a bit watered down, though faster. (There's no granularity in import/export. :/)

Apple may have jumped the gun or maybe Borneo didn't get the message. Fox News

Update: According to ars, Apple has made Mail.app play nicer with Gmail.
