what are suitable names for computers? i give my computers female names like lisa, lucille, manuela and hallie, but maybe i am wrong and should give them other names. Is computer gender OS dependent or hardware dependent. human gender is determined at birth prior to any social influences like education. so i think that computer gender is hardware dependent, although installing a new OS may cause the computer to become transexual.

I give them names that suit their function, like 'Piece of Shit', 'bastard', or 'goes down faster than a ten-baht ho'.

should i take this personally. i find this naming scheme inefficient. you dont call children bastard or piece of shit although they deserve it. computers like children could start revolting and then where we would be. i think you catch more flies with honey or the occasional RAM, OS or processor upgrade

Personally, I do not assign any gender to computers. I'm also not a terribly creative person in the field of naming, so my machines have rather practical names, or none at all. I have tux-server & tux-laptop, and simply put, my "mini." (I have yet to give it any other name.) My machine at work has a practical network name, and that's what I usually call it (or perhaps "The Fast Machine" [Wink] ).

I used to name my computers with characters from Megatokyo: Kimiko, Asmodeus, Seraphim (the ever trusty Thinkpad I am typing on). My roommate had a laptop that he christened 'Serenity' (a name far greater than the machine that it was given to).

I had another friend who named all his computers by food: Salad, Nacho, Waffle, Taco... mmmmm

Well, we all know that if you want to give something a really cool name, you just prefix it with 'man-', or in some other way stick 'man' in there.

Examples:

garage = man-place
truck = man-icle (man + vehicle)
computer = man-box
metallica = man-band

I plan on purchasing a 12.1'' powerbook here pretty soon, and I plan on calling it the 'mantop'.

Got a nice pair of man-breasts then, do you?

I take it, though, that you don't look for a man-whore after a night out drinking.

remember, this convention only applies if you want to give something a really awesome name.

whores don't need names.

My PB is female: cute and sleek. It also seems to lose data easily, is that a female trait? Haven't named it yet, though. My server is ugly, rough around the edges, but gets the job done (or did, until it broke ... should spend some time fixing it soon). I'm looking for a good zombie name for it.

My computer is ungendered. It's name is Mirkwood. When it was running ME it was Mordor. When it runs Linux it's Mithlond.

I think place names are good for computers. Others may disagree.

And yes, I am a Tolkien fan.

I tend to call mine after robots, I have a daneel, giskard, Holly and a Kryten at home

Although recently I started using Master & Margerita names, so my mobile phones are called Azzazzello and Berhmoth and I have an Ipaq called Korovyev.

famous literary characters is always a good one I find, or types of cheese.

Doh, mine too. Right now I'm posting from Neo. Trinity is my trusty server. And Morpheus was my poor, dearly departed laptop.
