See also: this and this.

You may also want to look into more careful spelling.

Today is not my day... I just lost what I was typing for the second time... Oh well, here we go again. This time going from oldest to youngest. (Not oldest to newest mind you, there is a difference)

Name: Hoder
Function: Currently between uses. Probably will end up as a mail server or something where speed isn't that important. (See below for reason)
CPU: Intel 80386 (16MHz)
RAM: 8MB (Go-go 30-pin!)
Storage: 202MB IDE (Connor Peripherals)
Video: Unknown, and too much of a bother to check right now.
Other Drives: 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" floppies
OS: Slackware Linux 7.1
Why I Love It: You mean besides getting to tell people that yes, I have a working 386 that atcually does stuff? Well, probably the fact that when I originally got it, it appeared to have GNU Hurd installed on it (I say appeared as it wouldn't boot from the hdd. fdisk reported the partition type as belonging to the Hurd, and the previous owner confirmed it had had some *nix-style OS on there)

Name: Bragi
Function: Audio machine.
CPU: Intel Pentium MMX (166MHz)
RAM: 64MB
Storage: 6.3 GB IDE (Fujitsu)
Video: S3 of unknown model (1MB PCI)
Other Drives: 32x LG CD-ROM
OS: FreeBSD 4.5
Why I Love It: I'm too cheap/lazy to buy a new sound card to replace my AWE64 (it works fine, sounds better than the onboard one on my Athlon machine) but since it's ISA and I have no ISA slots on my Athlon machine, it gets its own seperate machine (I need music, it drives me crazy without it. So it acts as a cd-player/mp3-plaer, and frees up 6 GB from my other hard drive)

Name: Heimdall
Function: Gateway/Firewall/Router
CPU: PowerPC 604 (132MHz)
Storage: 1.2 GB SCSI (Apple)
Video: I forget, whatever was built-in on the PowerMac 7600
Other Drives: 3 1/2" floppy, 8x CD-ROM (both also SCSI)
OS: Debian 2.2 PowerPC
Why I Love It: Two words: RISC & SCSI (Ok, so really they're acronyms. Pick up the shattered pieces of your life and move on)

Name: Bragi
Function: Webserver
CPU: Intel Celeron (300MHz, Slot 1 variety)
RAM: 64MB
Storage: 1.2GB (IBM)
Video: ATI Rage IIC
Other Drives: 5 1/4" Floppy (Hey, I needed a place to store it.)
OS: OpenBSD 3.0
Why I Love It: It (motherboard & CPU, rest are not the original parts) is the first computer I ever bought (Not the first I owned, that goes to a Commodore 128 that I still have)

Name: Loki
Function: Whatever I feel like making it do at the time. (Main work machine)
CPU: AMD Athlon (1.13GHz)
RAM: 256MB DDR
Storage: 45GB (IBM) (Yes, _that_ IBM drive)
Video: ATI Radeon 7500
Other Drives: Lite-On DVD-ROM, Yamaha CRW8824E (CD burner), 3 1/2" floppy.
OS: Currently Windows 98, XP Pro, Debian 3.0, OpenBSD 3.0. Previously (under different hardware configurations) has also had BeOS R5, QNX RTP 6, Plan 9 Release 3, and more Linux distros than I can count.
Why I Love It: Who says I do? It's been in the shop 3 times in the past 2 months (1st time: Fried motherboard, which was caused by a defective PSU that was replaced the 2nd time 'round, still awaitng the results of the 3rd trip) Ok, but besides that, it's faster then anything else I've got, which means that if I want to waste time, it's the perfect tool. (Ok, so the 286 under my bed that I haven't gotten around to installing Minix on is also good for that, but that's another story entirely)

There, that's them all. And what have we learnt from this? That I (a) have too much time on my hands and (b) really am too masochistic for my own good. (What other type of person would install Slackware on a 386? Not counting those who did when 386's were actually used for something other than paperweights)

yeah why would u want to do that? are you actually running the dvd and playing baldurs gate simultaneously or do you want the novel joy of doing it just for shits and giggles?

Ok, I wasn't going to brag, but this thread was just calling my name...tomorrow my brand new Gateway(I know, there are some of you who hate Gateway, but I've had great luck with them) will arrive. Pentium4 1.8ghz, 128mb(?)memory, and 80 something-or-other hard drive space. Also comes with a cdr so I can spend way too much time on WinMx. Considering my current system is 200mhz, I think I'm gonna love the speed!Woo-hoo!

Those of you who know me from these forums will know that the most astonishing thing about this is how excited I am! I feel like a geek finally!(Spungo's so proud ) I know, I won't be officially until I name it, so I'm working on it. Can it be any name I want, or are there rules?

My first car was an orange mustang my friends dubbed the"luv pumpkin",
hmm....

Name: Hex
Functions: Stereo/Game Machine/Word Processor
CPU: Athlon XP 1800+
Mobo: Soyo Dragon Plus!
Ram: 512MB DDR
Videocard: ATI Radeon 64MB DDR (Soon to be Radeon 8500 128MB)
CD: 40x Generic CD-ROM (Soon to add Plextor 20x10x40x12 combo drive)
Soundcard: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer
Mouse/KB: Microsoft Wireless Optical Explorer / Microsoft Natural Elite
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Speakers: 4.1 Digital Surround (I forget the brand)
Color: Scratched Orange
Why I love it: Because it always prevails in the face of ever the more powerful systems, It always knows exactly what music I want to hear, I can always run Winamp (Serious, if I had a game called "100% CPU Utilization" I could still run winamp in the background), and with the delicious orange paint job, it's still the darling of LAN parties.

WinXP will absolutely crawl with 128MB RAM, no matter how fast the processor is. But there's chance that number's a mistake; most manufacturers don't bother selling systems with such a small amount of memory any longer.
