They do this once a year, he spends half a day doing minor repairs, clearing gutters, whatever. The kind of things old ladies in their 80s can't cope with on their own.
He arrived at 9 AM yesterday (Friday).
The reason I mention this is that, at about 8:50 AM, (judging by the mild flooding in the kitchen) my mum had collapsed at the kitchen sink, with a blood clot on the brain.
So, the handyman called the ambulance, the Evil Socialized Medical System quickly diagnosed the problem,and gave her drugs to dissolve the clot. By the time I arrived at the hospital she was sitting up in bed demanding a cup of tea, with only mild 'numb face' symptoms on one side. When I left last night, she was looking even better, the facial movement was almost back to normal.
The doctors say she was very lucky, the treatment works well, if given early enough. If she hadn't been found when she was, things could have turned out very differently.
That once-a-year visitor arrived 10 minutes after the stroke.
It's almost enough to shake a mans lack of faith.

Well, it could very nearly have been anything else - a neighbor popping by with misdelivered mail, or what not. Fortunate indeed, extraordinarily so, but...I just don't quite want to go there. Enough bad happens around the world that I find it difficult to reconcile the stray good happenings with the rest. (The same $DEITY that seemingly stepped in for your mum sure is turning a blind eye in Syria.)
(Mind you, if you want some curious timing - apparently my grandmother fell today (Friday as well) and is in the hospital. It's not likely as serious (she's alert, but needs more testing)...but seems to be a not so great day for the elder relatives of GCers. :/)
I'm very glad to hear that she's doing so well. I'm also stunned to hear about that program of her council. That's an *awesome* system. It would surely be considered evil here, but it sounds just great. As to socialized medicine, I would point out that we have Medicare here, which covers everyone over ~65/66. (As such, my grandmother will be getting just about as good care as your mum...for nothing.) It's only the rest of us that have to hope we have/get jobs with good insurance plans...or that we don't get sick.

Oh how I wish that Medi-Care was as good as you believe. First off I have to surrender part of my pension (SS) to get Medi-Care and then there is the deductible each year.
TFD may I play devils advocate, could it be that your mum was worried about someone from the "town council" coming around and that caused her distress?

Just got back from visiting mum.
No sign of the slight left-side droop in her face that was there yesterday, she was holding her cup of tea† in her left hand (the side she hd trouble with yesterday), and basically looked fighting fit.
The medical staff who saw her come in yesterday are amazed at her speedy recovery. She was (to use the medical euphemism) 'quite unwell' yesterday - I've heard that phrase from hospitals before, usually as they're wheeling a patient to the Intensive Care Unit.

Nah, we're talking about a woman who wasn't intimidated when it was raining fire.
The home handyman thing is only one of the 'seniors' services the council provides and mum makes good use of them. A guy from the council coming round is no big deal, no more stressful than a visit to the public library.
† - I use the term 'tea' loosely - until she's been assessed by the specialist, she's on a 'thickened fluids only' regime - think thin tea-flavoured jelly. **Ugh!**
