But speaking of The Passion of the Christ has anyone seen it? I'm kind of curious to see it, but all I've heard about it so far is how bloody and graphic it is. ![[ohwell]](graemlins/ohwell.gif) I'm up for an interesting movie, but I'm not up for 90 minutes of beating and torture! Any opinions??

It's an interesting movie that is about 90 minutes of beating and torture mixed with 30 minutes of background and flashbacks. Artistically it is a good piece, however if gore makes you squeamish you might want to wait for the DVD so you can watch it on a smaller screen and stop to take a break whenever you need to.

I have not seen it but will rent it when the DVD comes out. I live in the bible belt of my state and the people they show on the news are (how do I put it lightly) Jesus freaks. They say nothing about the movie entertainment or artistic wise in the exit interviews but talk about "our lord jesus christ" recite a couple bible verses and some of the extreme fundamentalist are trying to recruit and or save people in the lobby. ![[shake head]](graemlins/shakehead.gif) CHEESES OF NAZARETH IT'S JUST A FREAKING MOVIE!!! I will watch it in the comfort of my home.
RANT:
I recently slammed the door on some bible thumpers going door to door in my apartment complex trying to spread the word and offering prayers (I did not give them a chance to give me their "you need Jesus now" speech) . Since most of the residents in the apartment complex are disabled I guess they feel the need to save them because if you're disabled you need to be saved. They are always coming around here leaving literature telling you how bad you are and that if you don't repent now you will go to hell. DON"T PUSH YOUR BELIEFS ON ME!

Christianity is probably not unique, but as far as I can tell, is unusual in that it not only encourages it's members to go out and recruit more, that is actually a requirement. Yes, some people are more annoying about it than others and there are definitely good and bad ways to go about it. (Showing love and kindness then telling why=good, protesting outside abortion clinics and telling everyone going in that they are going to Hell=bad) Anyway, I know a lot of people see it as a personal intrusion, but it is actually required as part of the religion.

I was brought up Christian (Lutheran) and went to church the 1st 18 years of my life and was never told to go door to door or to approach complete strangers and ask if they have "found jesus" . I think it varies by affiliation. i.e. born again and baptist really seem to push their beliefs on you and the need to be saved. I remember going to a baptist church with a friend when I was about 9 or 10 and being shown a movie about hell. It was some scary sh*t to be showing a child! Maggots crawling in skin etc.. Stuck with me for many years! My church on the other hand showed us episodes of Davey & Goliath.

Hmm, interesting topic. I agree with PB that spreading the word to non believers is an integral part of Christianity. Put it this way, if you believe that there really is a heaven and hell, and that everyone who isn't a Christian is going to hell, then you're going to want to do your bit to make sure people have the opportunity to know what Christianity is about. Anything less would be irresponsible and cruel under those circumstances.
That doesn't excuse ramming it down people's throats, though. The difficult part is the definition of ramming it down people's throats varies from person to person.
Oh, and to answer the original question. I haven't seen the movie, but am reliably assured it's very gory(for example, my minister's teenage son had to leave/not watch some of it, and I wouldn't have picked him as a "Flanders" type). I'm not sure if I'll watch it in the theatre, I might consider hiring/borrowing the DVD.

You know, I am a Christian, thus is why I am going to back myself up with the bible. I won't quote it, but I'll tell you it's in there, and why alot of "christians" do what you are talking about.
Now, this is for believers, I'm not going to force it on anyone. In one part of Jesus' teachings he said, that if 100 sheep are amongst you and the woods and one runs off, is it not worth leaving the 99 who trust you to go save the 1?
Basically saying, it is worth trying to lead those who have quote unquote gone astray.
Another part for believers. The Apostle Paul, was under house arrest when he wrote most of the letters he wrote in the New Testament(all of the books besides Mark, Matthew, Luke and John are letters from the apostles to different people and churches, oh and Acts, that was a history of the pentecostal church). The people around Paul told him to shut up and leave them alone about it until the day he died.
The examples presented to Christians in the bible, the very book they hold most sacred, are examples of radical martyrs for the big g God.
I'm not going to push anything on anyone right now. But the bible says Christians are supposed to push the word of their God onto people. I'm just not going to because I feel it would put off a forceful message, and everyone knows that noone likes having anything forced upon them.
As I said, nothing forced. I will say though. Read The Bible, it'll scare the Hell out of you.

As far as the Passion went, I feel it was, cinematically, excellent. It was very very graphic, but, as far as following the scriptures it is very very accurate. As far as anti-semitism, I have one thing to say, and on that I will leave this alone. Christians are jews, they are just another sect of Judaism, the sect that believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Just as in Islam there are the Shiites and the Sunnis. I'll leave you to figure out what's going on with them.

First off, I am Baptist and I've yet to see my church show a film on the fiery pits of damnation, although I must admit, it sounds cool. haha. j/k
Speaking as a Christian, I'll have to agree with you though. There are those that try to cram information down your throats. Maybe it's because I live in Cali, but I find that's more often associated with other religious groups, like Mormans, Jehovah's Witnesses, and the Church of Christ, all of which deviate from the Protestant Christian belief.
I'll also echo csk's comment on the fact that you can't really expect anything less than that, can you? Otherwise we'd be branded as hypocrites. I'm not sure if you can say that "saving" people is a requirement, but it's definitely encouraged. I mean, if you believed there's a hell, you would want your friends to hear that message.
I have seen the movie The Passion and it's not as shocking as people put it out to be. Yeah, it's gory, but I've seen worse in war and horror movies. And it's not all gore. I found that much of the emotional aspects are tied to the relationships Jesus had with his mom, disciples, and even total strangers around him, which is artistically done with flashbacks. You really do need to bring a box of tissues, unless you're heart is made of stone. Whether you believe the story or not, it's definitely a touching film. The Ben-Hur of modern times.

My main issue with Christianity and prosyletizing is the scare tactics so commonly used. They wave Hell around like a threat, like you're supposed to turn to God not becuase it might make you a better person but just because God can save your terrified ass. This might work for some, but, ladies and gentlemen of the bible-thumping, tract-passing persuasion, I will not worship anything out of fear. I know it might be hard to sell a religion without the carrot of heaven and the stick of hell, but that kind of nonsense is completely lost on me, especially since I'm pretty sure life is a one course meal. No appetizer, no salad, and no desert.

Plus, no-one has ever interrupted my weekend sleep-in by knocking on my door and asking if I want to listen to a short presentation on the life of Moses.
That's worth several bonus points in my book.
Shame about the Oysters Kilpatrick though ....
