I try to find out if a guy is available(for some reason, I can't just ask). I heard his birthday is sometime next month. I asked him if his birthday is coming up. He's really happy that I know. He said it's ok if I don't buy a gift because he's heard it's hard to shop for him. I wonder if that the person who thinks it's hard to shop for him is a gf. Do I read into that sentence too much? Would you refer to the bf/gf if that's the one said so?

I'd go with one of two options.

the first is to be talking to him and say "so what are you and you're girlfriend doing for your birthday this year?" in a friendly manner. if he has a girlfriend, he'll answer. if he doesn't, he'll say, "oh, i don't have a girlfriend right now." you're not really asking, you're just assuming and being corrected.

option number two is to ask a mutual friend.

Ha! Very tricky [thumbsup]

Abbyful, you got a good point. Well, what if I did the first but got no response, and I tried the second but that person doesn't konw [Frown] I know it sounds unbelievable... That's why I keep reading into that sentence...

I take it you've tried google-stalking him, he might have blogged something to indicate his relationship status.

Me, creepy? Why do you say that? [Wink]

Oh ferfscksake !

It amazes me that humans manage to reproduce.

If I was in a better mood, I'd wax poetic about the importance of seizing the day and being open about your feelings, but I'm in a more WWCVD mood.

Show up naked, with beer.

I prefer not to recieve gifts either. Some people just don't get off on have a gift given to them. When I recieve a gift, I feel as though I now owe somebody something. That is not a feeling I really enjoy. I can't speak for everyone that doesn't like to recieve gifts, but that's my perspective on the subject.

I just had to say this...

Yes. It seems kind of odd to me that you assumed that, but I guess people could freak out about that kind of stuff when they've got a big crush. Go with what Abbyful has suggested in option #1 - you can't go wrong.

Yes. You did.

I've been told I'm hard to shop for by my MOTHER.

Also, if it was my girlfriend who specifically told me I'm hard to shop for, personally, I'd have worded my response something like, "even my girlfriend finds me hard to shop for."

Which is not to say he doesn't have one, but I believe it does mean you can't conclude whether he does or not based on that sentence.

Women always try to read into what guys say WAY too much. Take what we say at face value. I can tell you personally, I'm not witty, subtle, or smart enough to put any such innuendos into anything I say. What I say means exactly what the words represent, there is no deeper, darker meaning.

Pardon for resurrecting this thread, but I need to correct something.

Me: Go with what Abbyful has suggested in option #1 - you can't go wrong.

I don't know if this is just because I'm female, but if I were a guy and someone asked me "so what are you and your girlfriend doing [-etc]?" I would wonder why did they assume I have a girlfriend? Of course, again, this is probably what that banana above me is saying. Heeh, banana! I ate a banana today...

Oddly enough, I was sort of thinking the same thing. So simple, so unmistakable - gets the job done [Smile] .
