In an effort to improve accessibility for people with disabilities, the city's building code will now require that new buildings have levers, not knobs, on all their doors.
I feel for the disabled but what about raptors!

Not just the disabled, have you ever tried working a door knob while wearing 3 layers of moose-skin gloves?

My old boss once told me that that's a modern requirement in US building code, and would be applicable for new construction or major renovations. The code basically says that a person must be able to open a door with about half an arm. As such, many points of egress either have levers or crash bars.

It's not part of the building code in the US, but rather part of the ADA. Public buildings have to be handicapped accessible and round doorknobs are inaccessible to people without hands. Private dwellings aren't subject to the ADA, so round doorknobs are still okay here.

Oh, my bad. I knew it had to do with ADA, but I thought that applied to nearly all new construction. My old boss (formally trained as a civil engineer) mostly did stuff that involved large places (mostly corporate) that I imagine fell under ADA's auspices. It seems to me to be a commonsense move to build things in this manner whenever possible, as I can't imagine the costs are that great today, and you just don't know who's going to need increased access as the years go by.

At the time we had this house built I was already 60+, so I asked for extra wide doors and lever handles. The oldest cat can jump on a handle and pull it down, however she does not know how to pull the doors open. This house is built for a Grampa and Gramma.

+1 for being able to hold a mug of coffee in each hand and open a lever.
-1 for catching a belt loop on the lever at least once a year and ripping it off my pants. Not kidding - I'm a uberklutz.

I applaud Vancouver's efforts to end discrimination against raptors.
