Nope, I just don't seem to be able to access most of the forum?! When I click on subforums no threads show up most the time. Weird...

That's because there aren't any very current threads - if you change the filter to older threads you'll find them. Or just use this link:
http://www.geekculture.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_daily

...which still requires fresh posts, and that's on a steady decline in this age of Facebook & Twitter.

P.S. On a loosely related note: What If You Stopped Going Outside?
Tomorrow the weather should be nicer, so I think I'll go for a good walk later on. Today it's gloomy out. :/

Or you could look for fifteen freshest posts and/or freshest topics, bookmark one or the other and you are good to go.

No... we didn't scare her away.

This won't be popular and it may piss some people off, but the problem is that the GC forums are all but dead. The average number of posts per day is probably hovering somewhere between zero and one. Why would she stick around when there's nothing to see?

The only way GC will ever become active again is if there are interesting, non-controversial* posts on a daily basis that newcomers be interested in and keep coming back for. Unfortunately, we don't have that and we don't have enough active forum members for it to happen spontaneously.

If a decent number of people** put forth the effort of coming up with interesting things and posting them every day so that there few new things to see, it might make a difference. It would probably be take months rather than weeks or days, though, and I don't think anyone here is dedicated enough to put forth that effort.

It would probably also help if everyone accepted a culture of allowing less meaningful but positive posts (i.e. "I love that!" or "Me too") for a while since most posters want some sort of positive response and will go away if the feel that all the responses are negative and critical.

And the least popular thing I'm going to say; it might be easier for Snaggy to create \r\GeekCulture on Reddit and hope for crossposts than to try to resurrect this place. At least it would save on the forum hosting costs.

* Controversial posts will only get people who want to argue to stick around and those people are forum poison because the constant arguing drives off anyone who wants to enjoy the forum.

** At least five, I would guess, since nobody will post something new every day. Five people, each posting once every three or four days would give you something new most days of the week. More people or more frequent posters would be better, of course.

I neither agree nor disagree.

I disagree people are somewhat shy and seldom will they write about something that does not stir strong feelings.

One thing I learned in American Lit. was that only those things that you care deeply about will you put effort into.If there is no controversy most people will scan the posts and go on to Twitter or Facebook.

The Internet has changed since 1999 when Nitro and Snaggy started this lovely place. People are now used to being limited to 150 or less characters in their replies, truthfully I am surprised that these forums have lasted so long, however I am not giving up on them.

I think it's a number of factors...

forum members getting lives, starting families, dying, etc

Forum software that doesn't bug you every time a post is made. You actually have to remember to stop by and check out the Forums. gasp!!!!

Facebook and Twitter big time.

How hard it is to sign up now, due to spambots.

Some folks purposely lowering their exposure to the Net after burn out.

me not screaming on the JoT page "check out the Forums!!!! "constantly.

people getting so damn sick of it here!!!!!! [Razz]

Forum members dying? Augh... I hope that's an exaggeration, but I fear not...

Families will definitely do it, to. I have no kids, but the people I know who do have mostly become phantoms. I don't blame them, the whole progeny thing has its rewards.

Sadly, people have been sucked into the insular world of social media. I understand why, but I also can't comprehend why. Forums have so much more potential than little "what are you up to?" posts that rarely say anything interesting anyway.

I'm also glad this place has endured, but I have a feeling the urge to tear it down has bubbled up more than once... this forum remains as it was, undaunted by sexy but often overly complicated or underly flexible new web technology... long may it run...

GrunpySteen has a lot of very good points and I wish I had more to offer to threads right now. I am happy to add a few me toos! and how cools!!!bbq1 to bring a bit of life back. I still come and look, though I have a hard time feeling like I have anything of value to add.

But after all these years I would hate it if the GC forums were to go away.
