From Reddit...

Surfer dude stuns physicists with theory of everything:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2007/11/14/scisurf114.xml&CMP=ILC-mostviewedbox

(to be fair, he is also a snowboarder dude.)

The actual paper:
http://arxiv.org/abs/0711.0770

He obviously played with Spirograph as a child!

"If E8 theory is fully successful as a theory of everything, our universe is an exceptionally beautiful shape. "

A surfer dude with a doctorate. He probably surfs so he can spend his time thinking about physics instead of academic bullshit.

It looks like his theory is actually testable, so good luck to him.

I took a look at the paper. Though I don't have a physics background, I do know a bit about Lie groups.

It's actually quite an interesting theory and has more intuitive appeal than string theory does. Mathematically, it is consistent (at least as far as I can tell), but no necessary conditions are given for adopting this shape of the universe, only sufficient ones. Some of the choices of mappings onto E8 seem a bit arbitrary as well - if the reasoning is given, it's grounded in the physics rather than the math. Of course, if this theory is verifiable (it might not be for a long time since it depends on us finding unknown particles), the equations will be empirically confirmed or modified.

Agreed with Xanthine about the academic BS - his life as a surfer probably helps him think about actual science considerably [Smile]

Serenak's amazingly simple theorem of everything...

"Just when you thought you had it sussed it all turns to sh*te again..."

also phrased as "you can't trust anything to not to turn bad on you and kick you in the privates"

and occasionally simply as - "life is a sexually transmitted terminal disease..."

Now I get it!

Thanks snaggy - that really sorted out the 8 dimensions in my head! [Wink]

That's just misinformation from The Great Conspiracy, they're trying to keep the awesome power of The Cauliflower Of Life to themselves.

Dude. I have no clue what you guys are saying.

That sure is a purty picture, though.
