Staying up to date. Back story, I will take cast off computers, install a flavor of Linux and get more life out the almost landfill material. Of the Linux flavors, I prefer Ubuntu, and Puppy. They work well, have low system requirements and "biggy here FREE."

The newest Puppy release has two versions, a retro version and a full feature version. At this point only the MrsMoMan's, computer will run the full version. My six year old comp, has to have the retro version.

This computer is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and gets weekly up dates, My fear is that at some point an update will exceed the hardware, this happened a few years back. Ubuntu and Puppy are both based on Debian.

Is anyone versed in Debian and aware of their current state as relating to hardware?

Therein lies one of my problems, this laptop will not boot through the USB ports, Must be from the IDE-ATA bus, (some form of a drive hardware) not using the USB port.

That would be nice, have a bunch of Thumb Drives each set up with different OSs on them. One could even be used for banking pull it out and the files are in the desk, not in the computer. That might persuade me into online banking.

The other problem with this computer is that it uses IDE-ATA and USB V1.1 not SATA and USB V3.+ its not that old to be missing so much of of the new stuff.

Debian is going to require some newer hardware. Not top of the line, but at 6 years old you will want a mid to upper level system. If it was a low-buck job it may be outclassed.

Puppy used to use the old Debian stable as a jumping off point but I don't know if that is still the case. Though I saw they now have a Slack based distro too.

I have to say that you may be getting to the point of having to do a brew your own setup from someone like newegg, or head out to Wally World and spend the bucks on a Windows box to wipe.

CommanderShroom, I really like laptops, I doubt I will buy a desktop machine again, they do work great for my main ham station, I use them for decoding Sound Card Mode Signals, and SDR (Software Defined Radio).

Tablet or Laptop, a Keyboard, Sata III and USB V 3.x all are a must. I do not need another phone. I would instal Ubuntu or have it pre-instaled, and then have Puppy, Knoppix ham editions on Thumb drives. I have USB Sound card Dongles and SDR Dongles
