As read in some newspaper. (german text)

So 2 youths were filling thier gas tank at a filling station.

It is an old filling station so the pump doesn't have an automatic shut off when the tank is full . ( Does anyone now how those autoshut-off nozzles work, I have always assumed it is some device that measures the conductivity of the nozzle). OK back to the story.

SO it was a bit chilly, and they were layzy and didn't want to stand there and hold the lever on the nozzle down ( which is what you have to do withthose old pumps wiht no automatic shutoff) SO... the found a twist tie to hold the lever down so they did have to get their hands cold. ( anyways they were busy smoking.)

SO now you have a gas pump, with no automatic shutoff, filling a gas tank .

The youths realize that the gas tank is rapidly filling and will soon be full and if they don't release the lever, gas is going to spray all over the place.

To expidite teh removal of the twist tie, because they dodn't have a knife on them, the decide to use thier cigarette lighter to burn through the twist tie.

They were unsuccesful, before teh tank could overfill, the gasoline fumes caught fire. The ripped the nozzle out of the car, gas went everywher on the ground and caught fire. They managed to push thier car to safety.
The gas station burned down. Noone was injured or killed.... somehow.

They haven't gotten any dumber in the last 5 years, at least.

And this is one way that the gas pumps know when to cut off

____ GS Good find I knew how they worked but had never seen such a good schematic. Ash, I knew of a biker that checked the gas level in his Harley with, You guessed it a Bic Lighter. Burned all the paint off the top of the tank, he was smart enough to put the cap back on thereby snuffing the fire. [shake head] [shake head] [shake head]

Here in the UK fuel pump nozzles all have the auto shut off feature... but years back also had the "lock the pull switch"catch - which meant you didn't have to hold the pump in your hand and it would run till the auto cutoff applied.

Somewhere along the line the little manual catch for that feature disappeared... now the auto cutoff is still there to stop over filling or "splashback" but the option to just let the pump "fill her up" is gone - not sure why or when that happened

I've seen the auto-cutoff fail a couple of times, petrol sprayed everywhere.

Very messy, very dangerous, and very annoying when the service station attendant tries to charge you for the petrol he spilled.

____ When filling stations had attendants most stations had the locking handle, then with the take over of attendant less or self serve the locks disappeared, some thing about no attendant in the area. I do believe that here in Michigan you are responsible for the clean up of all spillage that you cause, and all fuel that went through the meter.

I thought the locking catches went away because some regulator got paranoid about static electricity discharges. Trap people at the nozzle and they can't build up much static. Hot tip, though -- your gas cap is a pretty good fit in most gas pump nozzles (at least here in the US). Now you can pump your gas, wander around, and yack on your cellphone! Hooray for sparks!

Note: I don't use the gas cap trick. I stand like a meek sheep, squeezing the handle the whole time.

FFS: Original story is just plain stupid. (Horror of all horrors, they could have worn *gloves*.)

And smoking at the station...brilliant. My second favorite "thing you shouldn't do at a gas station" is running the engine whilst pumping gas.

Ugh: I guess that makes me a meek sheep as well, but my gas station has a relatively quick filler, and my car only takes about 10 gallons, so it's not that big a deal.

One classic I've seen every time there's been a fuel shortage or imminent price rise is at least one 4x4 owner desperately trying to get their tank as full as possible by nozzle jiggling and pressing the lever as it cuts off. By lifting the nozzle as the sensor is triggered they're usually able to get another 10cc of petrol into the tank at the expense of about a litre spilled over their car and the forecourt.

____ There-in lies a rub, both the truck and the Van have their tanks inside the frame rails. So there is considerable tubing to get the fuel from the filler cap to the tank, allow the fuel to go fast and it will trip the over fill devise, Go slow and get cold in the winter.
