For those of you interested check out these interesting benchmarkings.

Also read recently that early P4's actually had worse perfomance than late P3's - unfortunately didn't log the url [Frown] sorry!

I can attest to that...I had one of the old 1.4 ghz p4 chips. That thing was slower than hell. [ohwell]

Yeah, I'm really quite unimpressed by P4s - particularly the early ones. I've got a batch of machines that are probably 1.4s, running Win2k, and they take for-fscking-ever to boot up, and then still suck when you start applications. There is something really messed up about this - these are not *old* computers in my eyes - they're at most 2, maybe 3 years old. I don't think our PIII/933s performed that badly. However, I have a 2.something GHz P4 (2.4? [I forget]) on my desk @ work, and it *moves*. My perl code runs pretty damn fast on it (analyzed over 4 GB of logs in ~20 mins), so I'm happy [Smile] .

I built my wifes computer with an AMD 1100 (Running at 1.07Ghz) I never did get AMD's little numbering thing. But that is a differn't post. But to get to my point. I really like the AMD's over the P4's. I found that with the dual boot I have on there (XP and SuSe) It's snappy with both OS's(thats with 512MB ram BTW). My absolute favorite is the G4's [Big Grin] I really want to get my hands on a G5 but i have to clear that with the wife and since I just got my iBook it looks doubtfull for the time being. But of course if you read my last post I really want to upgrade my desktop for game use.

The new P4s are slick. Messner is running 22 of 'em. My boss buys into the myth, so messner upgraded from fully working and pretty quick P3s to P4. Another thing to look at when reading the benchmarks is hyper threads and the code they were testing. Intels Hyper thread can speed up or slow down the system depending on the application... There are a number of other variables to consider about hardware/software in benchmark tests... They don't make these things out to make a big difference in those (the one posted) tests, as it was just a by line.

By the way are we talking external clock, front side buss or EClock on each of these?
