I swear there was an american movie like this one when I was a kid (1980s), does anyone remember what it was called. this story sounds close enough to be a remake or a reboot or whatever you call it.

no, it is about a decade too late. mayb I am just remembering a book and not a movie.

Wasn't there another Borrowers movie?
Actually, there was, and there was a BBC series starring Ian (Bilbo!) Holm.
