I am not sure what is going on. I have owned this PC for about 4 months and I just finally figured out what is happening. Though I don't know how, why, or how to fix it.
When ever I save a photo from the net I go throught standard deal. Example*** right click, save picture as, name003 file type: Art[*.art]
If I don't change the name either by adding something to deleating part of it the file will be saved with a JPEG tag instead of an art tag. Basiclly the file is corrupt at that point as it cannot be read by anything. If I try to save as a bitmap instead it is no good either no matter whether I change the name or not.
Once saved with name change I can open them with IE which is the only thing that will open them. Then save bitmap and convert to JPEG. In other words this sucks! Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening?
Oh by the by, IE isn't working right either. I am having to run AOL browser because i can't get IE to work I get this message: Cache Error! An error of type 400 occurred: Bad Request. Unknown URL type. I can't get my beloved Mozilla to play nice with my fire wall and Ghost surf. But anyway one problem at a time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! - R00

First, a little hint. A file is corrupt when its data has gone bad. When it's just a wrong extension that the PC doesn't recognize, it's not corrupted, it's misnamed.
I'm a bit stumped by the automatic change of extention, but I suspect it's simply that your Windows system (caus I suppose it's a Windows system?) has no information about that extension. Add it to your extension list and set an application to open it (even if it's IE). Best advice I can give: get yourself a good graphic application. I believe GIMP to be a preferred choice over here. (I myself like Graphic Converter, but it's Mac only.)
About the 400 - Bad request: looks like a bad configuration somewhere. Unless you're doing something pretty stupid like typing https on a server with no secure socket, or an asp file from a site with no asp support. (At least, that's what I understand from a quick Google search. Remember, R00, Google is your friend.)
And for Mozilla having problem talking with your firewall, it's probably a configuration problem. Double-check your setting, and talk to your sysadmin/ISP support for correct settings if you don't know.
Now, I hope you're not here only for these questions and will disappear aftereward...
(Do people search for where to ask questions, instead of what they want to know? Why do so many people come asking here when they have a technology question? Google's first link when you search for "ask a geek" is here... Does Google like Geek Culture? Now _those_ are good questions! )

It's AOL, we're talking about here...
.art files are AOL images - and horribly mucked up at that. I wouldn't want to touch this with my 8 ft. pole. ;P
Speaking of AOL... http://isc.sans.org/diary.php?storyid=709

Sorry! But I have for me that the last time I used AOL was almost 10 years ago, and I cancelled it the second or third day out of the 10 free I had. So I'm sure you'll excuse me for not knowing the extensions they use.

Note: I'll be "nice" and assume that the formats AOL uses are because of patent issues (so they don't have to pay whomever).
I've tested AOL saving .GIF and .JPG images out of web pages and the result is simple -- NO OTHER APPLICATION CAN READ THEM !
Sorry ... don't be surprised if anything AOL writes to disk appears to be garbage. quote: Hex Dump: Ordinary GIF 0000: 47 49 46 38 39 61 16 00 GIF89a..

Well Aol sucks! I really hate it, but out of the 4 services I've tried in my backwoods area. it is actually the fastest. Now I know thats way hard to beleive as we all know how bad Aol is. Just apply what we know to what I said and you will see that villages in 3rd world countries have better internet service then I do.
I actually have IE and Mozilla working of sorts, but not really. I have been rooting through my firewalls and security program trying to figure the problems out. It infuriates me so much that I am almost ready to go back to my old pc and 98se. That 900 amd might have been slow and my HD full of viruses I could never seem to get rid of, but at least mozilla worked right!
As far as coming back I will most likly stop in from time to time. I don't have a ton of current pc knowledge needed to be very useful. What little I do have is geared toward older machines. Oh I'm a geek, I'm just the gamer variety not the smart, tech savvy, branch of the family.
GOOGLE is definitely our friend! Hey when you keep hitting a wall and can't get around, over or under, what do ya do? You ASK A GEEK! lol.
What I really need is a geek on my shoulder so she (sorry fellas no dudes on my shoulder, just sweet geeky little honeys) can tell me how to get all my programs to play. Ideally she could help me to get megaspoof to work with my main fire wall and Ghost Surf. And if she could get them all to work with Mozilla to boot, I would even consider cuddling afterwords.
Anyway thanks fellas I appreciate the responce. It lets me know that I'm having known problems. Which means they can be solved. I will come back scrounge around the site a bit when I have a bit more time. Thanks again - r00... to you

Oops One other thing. I called them corrupt because they are given the wrong name; JPEG instead of art. That makes them broken, as they are art files labeled JPEG. therefore corrupt. At least in my mind.
I don't wish to argue technical terminology with those far more savvy then I. That is just why I called them such.
I also can't get inside the file itself to fix the name so that the computer that knows what is wrong with them, but won't fix them, can read them.
Amongst many other things, I also write... Ah NO, not code, Stories. One day will right a short story or poem about how computers are the best form of suicide for people of my generation. Nothing like slow, agenizing sufferage to cause ones head to explode.
Anyway gents thanks once again! - r00

Well I'll be jiggered!
Stereo was right you can find out all about error messages by rubbing your google. Hmm Go figure. I am happy to say I have Mozilla working properly, IE is also working fine.
I can't seem to get mozilla to work with Ghost surfs routing hubs, but that will work itself out too. I typed in the proper proxy info etc. and all the rest of that crap but it doesn't want co-op. No big I will get it eventualy. Thanks again for all the help.
Now about that geeky little honey... I see I've had no takers yet. Come on Darlin don't be shy. I don't bite and am a lot of fun.
Thanks Guys!
