My Norton keeps telling me that an intrusion dectection has been blocked, but the ip addresss that it has blocked is my own!?! Can anyone tell me what this means? Thank you

3. reinstall*
4. don't load crap
*base* win2k, then cherryOS or pearpc and load Mac OS X in it
alternativley, mandrake or suse

It is possibly a program trying to make a connection, either an update type function or some spyware or a trojan. Does it give any further information as to what is trying to make the outbound connection?

Imagine this: You see a gaggle of geeks, hovering over their machines and chatting. You walk up and say:

OTOH if you had an actual intro post and maybe followed it up by: 'Oh, BTW my Norton is doing.....Can anyone help?' You may ahve spared yourself some ridicule.

As n4dmx said. It is one of two things either a program that you have purposefully installed trying to either send out info or trying to find updates. Like windows update.
Or, a virus or some other form of malware trying to do the same.
Norton should have a log feature that will tell you the name of the program that is trying to get out. Then you can hunt it down and see if it is a good thing and allow it or a bad thing and try to removoe it.

Grrr, I really despise all those anti-viral programmes. They just stop the LAN connection to my room, and stop all my programmes that require internet connection to work.
Yes I know it can be configured to allow them... but I'd rather just watch my back and run Adaware every few days. ![[Razz]](tongue.gif)

Okay fine, I overreacted - SuSE is acceptable (if troublesome and costly), but Mandrake is verging on being as bad as WinXP. No, whatever the latest Fedora Core is, Gentoo, something Debian-based, or even one of the BSDs would be the way to go. Then run PearPC off one of them, if you must.

I've heard that Mandrake's lifted their game lately, but I haven't verified this myself.
Incidentally, if androolia is still reading this, she might like to consider some sort of a hardware based router or something. Presuming you have a broadband connection, it's a significant benefit to security to do this. Well worth the (comparatively small) cost, IMHO.
