I've been following the San Fran air crash and missed this... whoa that is bad. Could there be a worse place to wreck?

While the Westinghouse system works and has gone through many improvement cycles, there is no parking brake. Yes I know every car has that hand wheel.

At the end of a shift how long does it take to set half of the brakes?

It may be a bit stupid of me, but having had a flight today, I have kept away from this story, as I didn't need to get my nerves overly rattled about the prospects. Problems with airplanes are statistically quite low after all. (That doesn't help the families involved, mind you...but a far greater number of families more the dead of auto accidents. :/)

I'll get caught up tomorrow, I imagine.

I thought that some would like to know how single pipe railway brakes work.

wiki about train brakes

Back in the day the cab of a locomotive had three people assigned A= Engineer, B= Fireman, C= Brakeman. Then there was the Caboose with the Conductor.

While the train was being shut down the Fireman attended to the fire and boiler, every one else went about setting the hand wheels on the cars to prevent roll aways.

The first job to be scraped Fireman, then conductor then the brakeman,

While the unions got blamed for featherbedding. How does rebuilding a new town fit on the balance sheet?

FYI: Patrick Smith (aka "Ask the Pilot") has written a piece on Slate about this:
