maia Member # 3778	posted May 18, 2006 07:57 There was a complaint that we were not "getting creative" enough for some people. So, here you go, my latest drawing. It was drawn with crayons. Let me know what you think. (EDIT: I raised the contrast so that it looks more like the original drawing. I think it was too washed out.) PS this forum may not get used as much as others, but it is here when we need it, and I do not think it should be removed. BESIDES, WHERE ON EARTH WOULD ROBERT DAVIDSON GO?

I have also been recording some vocal tracks of songs that I have written, and have been working in some long distance musical collaborations to incorporate instruments and sounds. I am also going to be doing some recording soon in a real studio. I will post links to some songs when they are done.

Elfwood, the old fantasy art site, has a good hand-drawing tutorial that I used to refer to quite a bit. Crayons are a neat medium for the right work, but if it's a serious piece, I'd consider redoing this one in a dense paint like oils or acrylics to give it some more painterly depth...maybe even painted on hardwood instead of canvas to add to the color depth. Up the contrast some; the inner chambers of the heart are going to be a much darker, richer red than is shown here, and that could make for some really interesting play with color and saturation throughout the whole piece...the background is very casually done, so shading the inside of the heart a deep crimson red, maybe shaded in indigos, would look very stark. (Yes, I took color theory and art classes. I have the right to sound pretentious.)

I do appreciate your comments. I have also taken plenty of art classes. I was an art major before I switched to math. And you're right, this isn't the most finished looking thing in the world, but it is just a sketch. I have done some "serious" pieces with crayon, like this. They can do a lot more than people give them credit for. Thanks for the link to the hand drawing site. I'll take a look.

That was the one thing that really dismayed me about art classes. We never got to play with crayons. Oh well. Colored pencils are also nice. I'm not sure that heart was ripped out and sliced in half, ZSR. It's being held too gently. It looks to me like it's been opened up and presented. No, wait...those hands don't look like they belong to the same person. The one on top is a woman's hand, the one below is a man's. That opened up heart is being shared. Very nicely done! The second one reminds me of something from one of the Narnia books.

It's hard to talk about art in any serious fashion without sounding like you've got the Eiffel tower crammed up your rectum, really. I guess you didn't comprehend what I was really trying to tell you, which was how you might want to take this concept further and expound upon it, since it is "just a sketch." If I didn't think it had any potential, I would've told you that instead, but it's a decent concept and could really be something more if you were willing to make it a finished work.
