I have a couple of gmail invites. If anyone wants one, PM me with your name and current e-mail so I can fill out the form.

I already have a gmail account, so I don't need another one.

But I want to ask you how long have you had your account? I haven't received an email to invite other people yet...

I've had mine for about a month or so, currently on my second batch of invites. [Smile]

your invites should be coming soon, the floodgates are opening.

btw, you don't get an email to invite, the opportunity to invite appears on your gmail account page

I have gotten about 12 to hand out so far. I've had it about 2 or 3 months. No stock or options. LOL
I have filled my last batch of invites, but will let you know when I have more.

Not to slight anyone, but is it really a good idea to be posting e-mail addrs around here? I'm not concerned about overloading mailboxes or spam, but rather about personal privacy. Just a gentle reminder.

I intended for my gmail account to be separated from my real life - it shouldn't really have any ties to my name. That's the only reason i posted it.

Csk, crawgator, and whomever else still needs one - send me your email address (to my gmail account) and I'll send you an invite.

In case you've missed the news, it very much is.

I just got some invites today, and this is an IM I received from a good [male] friend of mine (I'll add that I'm good friend with his /girlfriend/ as well, so there's no question there):
(11:55:30) [friend]: omg I love you

I rest my case [Smile] .

It's the invitation-only prestige, I think. We geeks, as a rule, are notoriously insecure -- I mean, we always got left out of the cool kids' clubs -- so we have to make our own, and pointedly leave them out. [Wink]

Ooby, Yahoo bumped its users e-mail boxes up to 100mb in response to Google launching Gmail. So you can thank Google for causing Yahoo to give you about 1/10th the size e-mail box you would have with Gmail.

Oh, I know that was all in response to gmail, and thankful I am. I wish I had more than 15MB space in my work email account (where 20MB files sometimes need to be moved).

I think it's funny how there was this huge bonanza and invites were being sold on ebay for over 100 clams. Now that there's an ever growing amount of invites, it's funny to see that mr. $100 invite winner just blew a fat wad of cash on a free email address.

I quite ike the idea of spammers getting a knock on the door from an irate CIA sysadmin.

Damn, I hate those (increasingly common) sites that need registration to download software. It's the perfect opportunity to use disposable email addresses, though. Plus if ever an address somehow finds its way to a spammer (has happened to me once), you know who the culprit was.

Good idea, csk - but if I have a mail server at my disposal, why not make use of it? (I used my test server the other day to deal with RealPlayer 10.) Right now, I just want to know how I'm getting spam in an account labelled 'spamtrap.' I mean, come on - shouldn't a spambot know* better than to e-mail an address with the word spam in it? That address is not published - rather, many aliases (created from now-disabled accounts) point to it. The only thing I can think of is that when I let it fill up a couple of month ago, the server might have sent back a message "Mail cannot be delivered to '[email protected],' mailbox is full" - and the damn spammer added it to their list. I just cleared 2000 messages out of that box today, skimming them in MozThunderbird (*awesome* piece of software), finding 3 legit messages, and forwarding 5 pieces of Habeas abuse to said company. I hate spam.

What happened to mutt? Unless this is on Windows, of course. Then you can still mutt using a port, or cygwin. Although, I have heard good things about Thunderbird.

It is on Windows, as a matter of fact. I use the cygwin port of mutt as well, but I'd heard good things about Thunderbird, and decided to try it out the other day, and found that it's quite nice. In many ways it functions like mutt does (threading, decent keyboard navigation support), and has a very clean interface (like Firefox). Also, I've got it set up for multiple accounts right now, so it can check 3 IMAP accounts right now (mine, spamtrap, and spamtrap2). The fact that it shows me full headers quickly, along with the text/plain part makes it invaluable. I just glance at the message, visually filter it, and hit 'n' to get to the next new message. Otherwise, I just use 'b' or 'f' for back/forward.

Here - get the facts: [Wink]

Without setting up my Gmail account, I received an e-mail from my pastor that showed up in Gmail instead of in Yahoo (sent to Yahoo, not Gmail address). Has that happened to anyone else?

Posted by supergoo (Member # 2280) on August 31, 2004, 19:02:

I'm just wondering how google distributes gmail invites anyway. When I first signed up I had several (don't remember how many now, probably six like everyone else) but then about 45 MB and 3 months later I've only gotten one more. It's still waiting in my inbox...but I think I'm going to give it to my bf (who has had the same yahoo account for 5 years).

Posted by drunkennewfiemidget (Member # 2814) on August 31, 2004, 19:11:

I'm moderately sure it's random. I've had a gmail account for about a month now, and I've received ONE invite the entire time. My gf decided she wanted a gmail account, so I got a friend of mine who had 8 available to him to send her one. She got on, and 1 day later she had 6 available too.

Posted by The Famous Druid (Member # 1769) on August 31, 2004, 19:39:

It may be based on email traffic volumes.

I've got 2 gmail accounts, one that I use for all the 'junk mail' (various newsletters I subscribe to, etc) which gets a dozen or so emails a day, and the other that I reserve for actual people email, but don't use much because most people still use my ISP-based email address.

It's the 'junk mail' account that got the invites.

Hmm, I thought that too, but my 6 invite account has probably had a total traffic of < 20 emails during its lifetime. It's either random/semi-random, or based on how long since you were invited. I'm guessing the latter, since there seem to be a few GC people getting invites to give out all at about the same time.

I'd be quite happy to, but you didn't try PMing me, and you've got PMing disabled, making it somewhat difficult to find out your email address to send an invite to. Perhaps you'd like to rectify one or more of the aforementioned problems [Wink]

Edit: Or just send a request for an invite to my email address, which has pelennor before the gmail.com, as mentioned before

I have resisted this long as I thought mine was adiquate, but now people keep wanting to E-mail me large photos. So, if any one out there has an invite and is feeling generous, please think of me [hearts] [weep]

Everything but the first one, officially from Gmail, violates the Gmail TOS which you agreed to when you signed up. It specifically states that screen-scrapers are a violation of the TOS. I respect Google, and appreciate the 1 GB of e-mai they've given me, and don't abuse it.

I could use 1gb of email, (*hint*) my email account fills up too often, then people can't send me emails until I delete some..

What do all of you think of google scaning you email for advertising?

My email address is avalible on my profile page if anyone needs it. (*hint*hint*)

I've still got five invites left, for people with reading comprehension skills (ie send PM with email address, or send email to pelennor with the gmail domain at the end).

I almost thought I had a gmail invite today but when I opened the emial it was only spam. And here I was all excited that someone remembered me, figures it would be something from a porn site. I can't believe someone would use Gmail Invite as their tag line. It was bad enough when they used to pretend they were responding to my personal ads but to toy with my emotions by pretending to send me a gmail invitaion, that crosses the line. I suppose I'll just stick to good ol' yahoo mail and keep the filters on high.

They've already given you invites to send out? They're really ramping up now...

I got my first six invites yesterday (already gave one to my best friend... hope I didn't waste it, but that's another story) after only having my account for two days (and sending one and receiving one e-mail).

If you want an invite, I need to know your first and last names and a current e-mail address.

Posted by Rhonwyyn (Member # 2854) on September 02, 2004, 08:36:

By the bye, how do you add addresses to your address book in Gmail, assuming it has an address book? For the life of me I can't find a link for it. Of course, I could just be having problems reading the page after too much time using Yahoo. Kinda like when I'm playing piano in two clefs and switch to viola in a third...

[edit] Oh, ha! It's the little link by my name in the right-hand corner that says "Contacts." Go figure. [Razz]

ok ok, I'm full up now, no more invites needed on my end [Big Grin] . Oddly though, all the names I tried were available so I was able to secure the accounts I really wanted instead of settling for some strange variant. Thanks to those who sent them. I'm a 3 account Gmailer now (I had no accounts before yesterday)and I have a feeling I'll be needing to unload invites of my own. I think the only thing worse than not knowing people to beg invites from is not knowing anyone to send them to. One account pretty much takes care of computer aware friends and family, not sure what to do with the rest. I do enjoy the problem of having too much as opposed to none at all though [Happytears]

I keep my hotmail account active. I've had since the non-microsoft hotmail days.

How is it that so many people can't follow simple instructions? I've still got four invites left, but people keep posting replies here rather than PMing or emailing me. OK, last time I'll rant on this, I promise [Big Grin]

Why do I only get ONE invite, and everyone that I know who's gotten an account in the last like.. 2 weeks got at least 6?!

Damn it. [Razz]

*edit: It's as though they read my post. I now have 6 invites. pm me your name and email addy if you want 'em.. alternatively, you can e-mail me your request at drunkennewfiemidget {at] gmail dawt com.

I have 12 invites.

Just sign up as a GC member and make one post saying how bad you want an account. Then neglect to either pm me or post your email addy.

I'll be sure to send you an invite. [Roll Eyes]

I know that with so many invitations available this probably won't make a difference, but I've got five more to give away if anyone wants one.

Oh yeah, and be sure to put your name and e-mail address in whatever format you choose to request one.

I've been lurking around. Most of the time what I want to say has already been said by someone else. No sense in repeating it. I'll try to be a little more vocal since you miss me. [Wink]

*puts his hand up as one of the culprits for ill-considered drivel*

It seems gmail REALLY likes me now. Every time I give out an invite, I get it back!

I had 6. I gave out one, next day, I had 6 again. I've since given out two, and I now have 5 again!

I think everyone who wants one has a gmail account now.

I gave out 6 invites all at once yesterday, and this morning I had 6 more.
