I have played this game on another forum I frequent and I find it fun.

Start with a 4 letter word.
Change any ONE letter each time to make a new word, e.g. team changes to seam.
You can't mix the letters up, e.g. team changed to meal is not allowed.

1. Post no more than once a page or 24 hours per member, whichever comes first.
2. No repeated words.
3. No curse words.
4. Must be a legitimate English word.
5. No words unfit for Scrabble (i.e. proper names etc.)
6. The person that comes up with a word that no one can change into another word is the winner.
7. No more than 6 rules...oops [Big Grin] [crazy]

Now, to start the game.

This started six pages ago and you're going to take me to task for that? Sheesh. Forget I even tried.

Next time you want to chastise me, have the consideration to PM me. There was no reason to do that in public.

I'm not trying to chastise you, and I am sorry if it seemed that way to you. It's just a friendly reminder. Don't be mad ok.

ewomack: The only thing you can win is the famous "noprize", suitable for framing and hanging on your wall. [crazy]

Edit: Grey_girl, I guess I am partly to blame. I guess along with posting the list every now and again, I should also repost the rules:

It's a good idea, because not everyone is going to go back to page one, especially if you load the thread from the "15 most recent posts" link.

So I won't post until tomorrow. Promise.

Sorry mine has been used: 7th column 3rd row. Sine is still the last word.

Edit: Here is a helpful hint. Use the find feature in your browser to check to see if a word is in the list. That's why I try to post the whole list every page; it helps to keep track of what words have already been used without having to go back and look at every page.

Sorry, not a real word. If you are going for a singular of pubes, the word you are looking for is pubis. The last legitimate word is pubs.

Maia, if you want to make another post, since the previous word was invalid, you may go ahead.

Mala is the Sikh word for prayer beads. It's a foreign word; are we allowed to use it?

Posted by CrawGator (Member # 392) on October 31, 2005, 12:16:

Mala is a short version of the word malar which is the arch of bone beneath the eye that forms the prominence of the cheek. Therefore, we can consider the word legit.

Unfortunately, caps was used twice. However, cops --> cups would not be in violation of the rules, so I am going to eliminate the first caps from the list to keep from backing up.

Word is still "sill."

EDIT: Google's "Define: Nill" turned up no results, but OneLook.com brought up a list of online dictionaries that showed nill to be an obsolete English word meaning "not to will/wish." Game moderator, will "nill" be allowed?

We didn't allow "nill" which was an old word now obsolete, so I'd guess that a Medieval cooking term wouldn't count either, but that's not my call. I haven't any idea where you found that Website, Spungo 'cause a Google search for zesy turned up a whole bunch of Polish and Eastern European sites. OneLook.com also doesn't recognize the word in any of the dictionaries it searches.

From the homepage of Spungo's site:
quote:
Here is a collection of commonly-used Middle English words & phrases found in surviving medieval cooking manuscripts, with brief modern English translations.
The question now becomes, "Is Middle English legitimate English?" (This game has been educational, that's for sure! [Smile] )

If "zesy" does work, I now have a winning word for the version I'm playing on another board! [Big Grin]

The rules do not state that it must be a legitimate non-Medieval word, do they? Therefore I win, and I claim my magic turnip.

Never play word games with a man who owns a copy of the complete oxford dictionary.

OOO... Spungo just got served! [Razz]
That is, if the powers-that-be allow an obsolete word. (Precedent says not.)

Oh, so now we're allowing words from medieval cook books, but not from the Oxford English Dictionary?

Posted by Rhonwyyn (Member # 2854) on November 04, 2005, 18:10:

That was my original question, TFD, but since I posted the last unquestioned word, it's not my ruling to make. If you can find "nill" in your OED, then you might be able to argue for the inclusion/acceptance of "besy."

Y'know, there's an OED in the chem office. Too bad it's closed for the weekend and I'm at home. Otherwise I'd go look it up.

Anyways, in case TFD's word is allowed, I submit "busy" as a follow on.

hmmmm.... zesy, zesy....

ahh here it is:
 -
Zesy: Plant is straight, vigorous, and strong. The leaves are green and big. The young fruits are butter yellow in color, when matured, the fruits are light red in color and pungent. Awsome taste.

I would have allowed nill since it is in the OED, but nill was invalid since I did silk --> milk before YaYa did sill. No big deal though, it can be used later.

Sorry I had to back it up. File was used long ago. Best was used after bast, but it was a repeated word also. I substituted last and reordered the words slightly so we didn’t have to go too far back.

We're playing this game over at FiddleForum. It's helpful to copy and paste the word list everytime someone posts, just add your new word at the bottom of the list. That way it's easier to avoid duplicates. (It also makes page turns come sooner! [Smile] )

game gams gums guns nuns suns suds sods pods pops pope pole role roll roil boil soil sail bail jail nail tail tall call fall fill file fine mine tine tint hint hind bind bond bone bong long gong tong tone tote note nose pose rose hose tose lose lost post cost cast case base bass pass paws pawn dawn fawn lawn lain main fain pain gain gait bait baht balt bolt dolt molt most mast mist fist fish disc disk dusk duck muck luck puck tuck tack task cask cark nark bark park lark lard bard bars mars mark park part wart waft daft raft rift rife life line pine sine mine sing king kind rind find fins pins puns punt bunt runt rust rush tush bush lush push puss pubs pups pops pots pats vats rats cats cots dots dote rote rite ripe rope tope cope cops cups cuss suss sass mass maps caps cams rams dams jams jamb lamb lama mama mala male malt salt sale pale tale talc talk balk bilk bulk sulk silk milk mile mole sole sold told bold mold cold fold fend mend wend tend tens tons tans bans band bend bent best zest zesy besy busy bust lust must musk mask bask bast last lest jest rest pest pelt [melt] meld held helm hell hill hall halt hale bale bile wile wife fife five hive dive live jive jibe jibs ribs rims rime lime limp lump rump mump dump pump jump sump hump hemp help kelp yelp yell cell celt felt belt welt wept kept kelt pelt pell pall pail pair fair fain fail foil roil toil toll poll

(Hmmm... someone snuck "Mars" in there. Last I checked that was someone's name and a planet's name, which makes it a proper noun, something Scrabble doesn't allow. That breaks the rules! [Razz] )

Yes, and mine is listed twice, alphabetizing them made that stand out.

sort isn't working on my computer (think it's the fact my terminal is in unicode mode ???), so I wrote a quick one w/o error checking, that calls STL's sort.

code:
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <vector>
#include <algorithm>

using namespace std;

int main()
{
string word;
vector<string> v;
while(cin)
{
cin >> word;
v.push_back(word);
}
sort(v.begin(),v.end());
for(vector<string>::iterator i = v.begin(); i != v.end();++i)
{
cout << *i << " ";
}
return 0;
}

If anyone wants to use it, every page or so...

you insult our intelligence! those of us who cook know that roux is a French term for the start of a basic white sauce. remember, it's in that link you posted with the recipe for apple mac 'n cheese?!

/me is too tired to capitalize properly, so your forgiveness is appreciated!

I wasn't challenging your word. I was just commenting that it's more common than what it appears you think it is. Heck, anyone who watches Martha Stewart should know roux, creme fraiche, pate, clarified butter, etc.!

"Lyte" is a suffix, not a complete word. Do a search on OneLook and it comes up as "-lyte," thus breaking the rule of Scrabble, and returning the word to "Byte."

At least, that would be my ruling on the other forum where I'm moderating this game. Mod here, what's your ruling?

(Incidentally, I can think of at least two other words ending in "-yte" with which we can continue this game, whether "byte" is allowed or not.)

Posted by Rhonwyyn (Member # 2854) on April 10, 2006, 21:34:

The list up to -lyte, on which we're still awaiting a ruling:

game gams gums guns nuns suns suds sods pods pops pope pole role roll roil boil soil sail bail jail nail tail tall call fall fill file fine mine tine tint hint hind bind bond bone bong long gong tong tone tote note nose pose rose hose tose lose lost post cost cast case base bass pass paws pawn dawn fawn lawn lain main fain pain gain gait bait baht balt bolt dolt molt most mast mist fist fish disc disk dusk duck muck luck puck tuck tack task cask cark nark bark park lark lard bard bars mars mark park part wart waft daft raft rift rife life line pine sine mine sing king kind rind find fins pins puns punt bunt runt rust rush tush bush lush push puss pubs pups pops pots pats vats rats cats cots dots dote rote rite ripe rope tope cope cops cups cuss suss sass mass maps caps cams rams dams jams jamb lamb lama mama mala male malt salt sale pale tale talc talk balk bilk bulk sulk silk milk mile mole sole sold told bold mold cold fold fend mend wend tend tens tons tans bans band bend bent best zest zesy besy busy bust lust must musk mask bask bast last lest jest rest pest pelt [melt] meld held helm hell hill hall halt hale bale bile wile wife fife five hive dive live jive jibe jibs ribs rims rime lime limp lump rump mump dump pump jump sump hump hemp help kelp yelp yell cell celt felt belt welt wept kept kelt pelt pell pall pail pair fair fain fail foil roil toil toll poll pool fool foul four tour tout bout pout lout gout (a.out) rout roux roud roup soup sour dour doer does dots pots lots loss less fess fuss fuse muse mule mute lute cute cite kite bite byte

May I suggest that you copy and past this block of text, adding your word after the then-current word? That way we won't have to go hunting back a few pages to find out if our word has been used already. (It also helps page turns go faster sometimes. [Wink] )

For example: "Lyte" is thrown out. Xanthine thus pastes the list and adds hers, like so:

game gams gums guns nuns suns suds sods pods pops pope pole role roll roil boil soil sail bail jail nail tail tall call fall fill file fine mine tine tint hint hind bind bond bone bong long gong tong tone tote note nose pose rose hose tose lose lost post cost cast case base bass pass paws pawn dawn fawn lawn lain main fain pain gain gait bait baht balt bolt dolt molt most mast mist fist fish disc disk dusk duck muck luck puck tuck tack task cask cark nark bark park lark lard bard bars mars mark park part wart waft daft raft rift rife life line pine sine mine sing king kind rind find fins pins puns punt bunt runt rust rush tush bush lush push puss pubs pups pops pots pats vats rats cats cots dots dote rote rite ripe rope tope cope cops cups cuss suss sass mass maps caps cams rams dams jams jamb lamb lama mama mala male malt salt sale pale tale talc talk balk bilk bulk sulk silk milk mile mole sole sold told bold mold cold fold fend mend wend tend tens tons tans bans band bend bent best zest zesy besy busy bust lust must musk mask bask bast last lest jest rest pest pelt [melt] meld held helm hell hill hall halt hale bale bile wile wife fife five hive dive live jive jibe jibs ribs rims rime lime limp lump rump mump dump pump jump sump hump hemp help kelp yelp yell cell celt felt belt welt wept kept kelt pelt pell pall pail pair fair fain fail foil roil toil toll poll pool fool foul four tour tout bout pout lout gout (a.out) rout roux roud roup soup sour dour doer does dots pots lots loss less fess fuss fuse muse mule mute lute cute cite kite bite byte

Then I copy and paste the list (including Xanth's word) and add mine:

Unless you can give a definition that we can find in a dictionary, I don't think duma can be considered a legitimate English word.

Du·ma (plural Du·mas)

noun
Definition:

1. modern Russian parliament: the parliament of modern Russia, established in 1993 after the dissolution of the former Soviet Union

2. tsarist Russian parliament: a Russian council or parliament during the time of tsarist rule, set up around 1905 but quickly deprived of power

[Late 19th century. < Russian]

Encarta

It's in the dictionary, but as a proper noun, so it's not acceptable for Scrabble, aye?

I agree and think that Duma is a proper noun in english. Only in Russian would it be a noun meaning congress or parliment.

Ok, I went through the list and found a few duplicates. I found a way to rearrange it a bit, added one word and got rid of Mars, a proper name. The upshot is I kept most of the list so that it falls in my original guidelines of the rules.

It can be, but it appears to have at least one definition which is not a proper noun and is acceptable for Scrabble.

Umm, "nads" is slang for "gonads" last I checked, and thus isn't a valid Scrabble word. Xanthine's entry of "pads" does follow after "wads" so it's not a big deal.

"Game" turns into "Wadi" by many changings, and "Wadi" will turn into something else that'll create other words....by the way "Cadi"!

I'm going to put in a request for an explanation on exactly what rule I've broken as well.

1. Post no more than once a page or 24 hours per member, whichever comes first.
Check
2. No repeated words.
I searched the pages, and had found no instances of those words (although I may have been mistaken)
3. No curse words.
I'm pretty sure sile, file, and filo are not offensive to most
4. Must be a legitimate English word.
They are all legit, reference your local oxford dictionary if you don't believe me
5. No words unfit for Scrabble (i.e. proper names etc.)
Check

Posted by Steen (Member # 170) on July 06, 2006, 19:50:

Mac D posted file.

The 27th word posted in the game was file. See rule #2.

canadiangeek posted Site --> sile --> silo --> filo

The spirit of rule #1 (one post per page/day) is that you post one time, changing one letter to make a new word. If we allow more than one word per post, I could take a few minutes to create word trail that went from the very first word to a dead end surrounded by words that I had used in my own post and ended the game on the second post. As a result, one post has to be limited to one word, else the game can be easily ruined by the first smartass who comes along. Thus, posting three new words in one post breaks the spirit, if not the letter, of the first rule.

That said, sile also does not appear in a search of the official scrabble dictionary (search for yourself), which breaks rule #5.

Ashitaka, I think that perhaps you should pay a bit more attention to rule 1.

That said, strictly speaking this post breaks rule 1 itself, so who am I to talk? Besides, this thread would have probably died weeks ago had it not been for your input. So never mind.

No... but rule number one goes as follows:
quote:
1. Post no more than once a page or 24 hours per member, whichever comes first.

Notice there's a "once a page" clause in there. But like I said, I don't have a problem with it if no one else does. It doesn't really matter.

Comments and corrections are outside of the game and the rules. The rule only applies to posts which change the word to a new word.

Posted by Ashitaka (Member # 4924) on August 07, 2006, 01:13:

Just for clarification, and becuase I am curious. I read the first rule to mean you can post only once in a 24 hour period of time, Unless the game has reached a new page, in which case you can post again, even if it has not been 24 hours since your last post. By post I mean adding a word since there are many posts, like this one, that do not add a word.

I do:

awet: Name for the crook, the royal symbol of the kings adopted from teh god Osiris and the ancient sheperd diety Andjeti. The crook denoted the pharoh's role as the guardian of the people of hte Nile.

Good question; I don't think we could consider awet a legitimate word for the purposes of this game. I can't find it in any online dictionaries. I would have to say that the last legitimate word is apes.

"pecs," unless someone can find another definition of it, is the plural of the abbreviation for "pectoral," and since abbreviations aren't allowed, "pecs" shouldn't be allowed.

At least, that's my $.02.

"Pec" is a slang or informal version of "pectoral" (depending on which dictionary you use) and is also listed in both Stedman's and the Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionaries. It's a shortened form of the word, but definitely not an abbreviation. (I actually looked this up before posting "pecs", believe it or not [Wink] ). So...judgment call anyone?

Posted by Ashitaka (Member # 4924) on September 08, 2006, 03:23:

I thought as well that Pecs was an abbr. However, abbreviations in dictionaries are followed by peroids. Pecs is not, and so is slang and not an abbr. It is a valid word. I however wonder where dictionary writers draw the line between something like this being slang and being an abbr.

Checkmate? [Wink]

Edit: OK, we have an anomaly. All day I've been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to post "jimp", as I believe that it cannot be changed to another word within the rules. In fact, I've been setting it up for the past two pages, narrowing possibilities, and was so happy to see someone take the bait by posting "simp" (thanks, garlicguy! [Wink] ). However, there's a problem: at the bottom of the previous page, "limp" was posted...but apparently "limp" was also used on page 13. Since no one called it (I didn't notice it until just now) and play moved on, is this analogous to a penalty that was only recognized later on instant replay? Or play moving on though someone neglected to yell "Uno!" when they only had one card?

Regardless of any official ruling, I'm still proud of "jimp". [Smile]

zarf -> zurf

Man, what a weird string of words! I had to really search to find "zarb" (a Persian goblet drum). A "zarf" is a metallic cuplike stand used for holding a finjan (a what?! [Confused] )...while playing a round of Fizzbin, no doubt. [Wink] (It's essentially an ornamented holder for a hot coffee cup.) "Zurf" is an alternative spelling of "zarf".

My only question is whether zarb is considered an English word (Rule #4: Must be a legitimate English word). I couldn't find it in any onlne dictionary, though I did find it mentioned in Wikipedia, and on a few webpages (where it appears capitalized, a Rule #5 no-no).

The OED has no entry for zarb - sounds flaky to me. I imagine it should be struck from the record, but I'm really not following the whole thing closely.

zarf/zurf is in it as "A cup-shaped holder for a hot coffee-cup, used in the Levant, usually of metal and of ornamental design."

I'm sure it's a English word to describe a persian goblet drum, the persians will have their own name.

Then as long as everyone's in agreement about zarb, the current word is "zurf".

That's exactly what I found -- for example, the first listing under that link above is for the word "Lachrymatory", then it lists the plural form, "pl. -ries", meaning "lachrymatories". The other 18 entries are similar. So I think the last word is "riel" until we get a ruling from The Powers That Be. Powers...? [Wink]

5. No words unfit for Scrabble (i.e. proper names etc.)

Scrabble doesn't allow prefixes and suffixes, so it isn't allowed unless a definition for "ries" as a whole word can be found. That leaves the current word as riel.

I've searched through numerous regular, Scrabble, and crossword dictionaries and don't find "tsan" as a legitimate English word (rule #4). Assuming this will hold up, "tsar" is the last word in play so I move...

If "tsan" is accepted as eligible, then my move is...

TSAN (The SysOps Association Network) was an underground network of bulletin board systems that shared an interest in phreaking, hacking, and cracking. The network was especially active in the late 1980s, when it linked the message and file boards of several hundred bulletin board systems via Fidonet.

It's not an English word. Instead an acronym, to the best of my knowledge.

Words are added to the english lexicon every year. Perhaps this thread will start up again a few years from now after a new playable word is created and universally adknowledged.

Ok, it is a long shot but it could happen, or it could "osat" as I have been saying for the last day. [Wink]
