I've been reading a Teach Yourself TCP/IP in 24 Hours type book and am finding it fascinating! It's so cool to finally know a bit about how IP addresses work, how e-mail gets sent, etc. The chapter I'm on now, however, dealing with troubleshooting utilities, has been pretty mind-numbing as I have no real frame (no pun intended) of reference for this sort of thing. Then the word "ping" jumped out at me. I know this word! People in IRC ping each other all the time! So I decided to ping my own computer. I followed the directions, opened a c-prompt, typed "ping 127.0.0.1" and...

I exist!!!!!!!!

I mean, I knew it all along, but there it was (literally) in black and white!

Anyway, it was pretty damn cool. [Big Grin]

Old joke, I know, but couldn't resist:
I'm going to get one of those new-fangled internet-capable kitchen appliances - then I can ping the microwave...
(exit stage left, pursued by a bear...)

Where's the instant graemlin for 'groan'?

Ah, ancient Unix humor. [Big Grin]

quote:
imadev:~$ csh
% got a light?
No match.

quote:
imadev:~$ man sex
No manual entry for sex.

quote:
imadev:~$ make love
Make: Don't know how to make love. Stop.

(I cheated a bit on the last one, and changed my PATH to point to the hideous HP-UX version of make instead of GNU make. Don't ever use HP-UX's make in real life, though.)

I think pinging oneself is a wondrous past-time... at least, you're less likely to catch a nasty virus. [Wink]

Just a shame that finger has gone out of fashion. Jokes a plenty with that command

Now I'll grep my HD for my variant of that, when I wasn't readily able to find that.
Yup, the result of `grep finger *` in my log folder:
cd pub; who|grep [geek++|blond]| cd ~; unzip; finger; touch; mount; fsck; gasp; yes; [more;] umount; sleep;

Admittedly, that might be an improper use of a finger [Wink] , and it could have been used in lieu of 'who' to be more accurate. All of the above commands do exist in *nix (they're just being called in slightly improper context), this is why *nix is sexy!

Watch the movie at http://www.warriorsofthe.net/

It is a good visual aid. I showed it in my cisco networking academy back in highschool.

Heh, the first entry in this thread reminds me of this UF strip. I can so see this happening to some script kiddie/s.

you better be careful with that self pinging, you'll go blind and grow Hair on your modem

The shirt has mount *before* uptime... that's not right. Here's the one we use in #debian:

quote:
12:54 =greycat> sex
12:54 =apt> hmm... sex is updatedb; locate; talk; date; cd; strip; look; touch; finger; unzip; uptime; gawk; head; apt-get install condom; mount; fsck; gasp; more; yes; yes; yes; more; umount; apt-get remove --purge condom; make clean; sleep

don't tell me you:
code:
alias sex "updatedb; locate; talk; date; cd; trip; look; touch; finger; unzip; uptime; gawk; head; apt-get install condom; mount; fsck; gasp; more; yes; yes; yes; more; umount; apt-get remove --purge condom; make clean; sleep"

.. for quick access

I never realized how very very dirty *nix was! Learn something new every day, one supposes.

With a command set that includes "finger" and "touch", the possiblities for lewd innuendo and word play abound.

Hehe... So many more intresting jokes in this than in, say, win...

Any other jokes out there?

Along the lines of "got a light" and "man sex", there are a whole load of other commands you can try, but none of them ever worked for me in bash in either Linux or Sun OS - using a different shell might solve some of it.

As for other jokes, try ShadowElf's Computer Humour page (look out for Proper Care for Floppy Diskettes (hilarious) and, for C programmers, The Ten Commandments of C Programming) and the Microsoft and Bill Gates Jokes Page.

Err... read Jessycat's leading post... she pinged 127.0.0.1.

Posted by Jessycat (Member # 1171) on April 24, 2003, 10:08:

Yup, as Spungo said, I pinged 127.0.0.1. THEN I pinged localhost, then I pinged the name of my localhost, then I pinged my IP... once I started I just couldn't stop... [crazy]

P.S. I love all the *nix jokes!!! Maybe someday I'll even get them... [Smile]

Woo to you, Jess! [Smile]

Btw - what are you running? Lemme guess - feline-ux?

Oh no you don't, Spungo... I know better than to get into a kitten discussion with the likes of you! [Razz]

I'm actually still dependent on XP, though I do have my Linux box sitting here, waiting patiently for me to get off my ass and decide to play with it again. Baby steps... baby steps... [Smile]

Ah, that's mean. That really hurts. [Frown]

I guess I'll just have to console myself with Fluffy and FooFoo, here. [Smile]

Well, since this came up, and the fun we had with limericks earlier:

code:

find sexy -type smart; make out
cd $HOME; touch; unzip; mount
finger; yes
fsck; yes
more; umount && logout
