Reader John sent me a link, to "With Folded Hands" a 1949 sci-fi book that today's comic echoes… very cool!

Sir Snaggy, I grew up in the suburbs of Flint, Mi. The cradle of the American war machine GM ran that city. There was the Grand Blanc Tank plant, AC Spark Plug home to machine guns, Ternstead Jet engines. Chevrolet heavy trucks, and Buick Staff cars for the Generals.
We had weekly air raid drills, Tornado drills, and the loose lips sink ships classes.
Yes we opened the Box of Worms, let the Genie out of the Bottle.
Is the world better for our actions, well Germany was purifying heavy water (deuterium)The Us took a shorter path to that end.
Yes I have great fear for mankind.

This reminds me of what happened here in Dallas last week. They sent a robot in to blow up a shooter. Don't they usually send in tear gas, or even something stronger, so that they can subdue the guy and put him in shackles? Did they not become judge, jury, and executioner all in one stop? I'm not saying the guy didn't have it coming; you don't kill and maim people without consequences... unless you're a rogue cop, perhaps. And let's be clear; rogue cops aren't the same as normal cops. This shooter targeted normal cops to get revenge over some rogue cops who were far away from here. Nothing about his actions made real sense, nor did he deserve clemency, but it's still America, and even a criminal is entitled to a trial by a jury of his peers.
I'm sorry, but sending in that robot seemed like more of the same thing the shooter was protesting: black people get different treatment. White guys are usually mass murderers. Almost always. This guy fit the mass murderer stereotype, except that he was black. Paint him white, and he was a perfect fit. But they always try to bring in the white mass murderers. If they don't kill themselves, they usually stand trial. So... was the decision to send in the robot in any way racially motivated? "Oh, it's just an angry black guy. Send in the robot and blow him up."
People say "you'd have done the same thing if you'd been there." I categorically and emphatically disagree. I may have FELT like doing that, but I'd have upheld the rigorous definitions of my job as a cop (if I were a cop and was there), and I'd have risen to my duty to bring him in for trial. If he managed to get past our tear gas and try to attack us, then we'd have him in 3 sights at once, and one of us would drop the mofo.
But I'm way off track. I didn't come here to argue that. I came to talk about robots as weapons. Especially drones. Once we've opened that Pandora's box, there's no getting what was inside it back in the box, ever again. You can already buy the stuff to arm a drone, and you know that iPhone apps aren't far behind. Maybe Android, since Apple would probably not approve it in the AppStore. But an existing drone app could be modded on the receiving end to operate a weapon along with the camera. Fly right up to a window, blow them away, then disappear. Nobody could ever trace it. This is interurban warfare, 2020.
Yes, I'm worried. I'm worried that police already opened that box.

Scary, isn't it.
