Apple's just announced a stock split, so heck, that's a good enough reason for us to celebrate with a special giveaway! [Big Grin]

Keeping with the split theme, we're giving away two copies of Farscape, the PeaceKeeper Wars, a great two DVD set about an astronaut who finds himself in an alternate universe. [crazy]

So, how can you win? Easy! All you have to do is post a reply to this thread, and you're in on the giveaway. Then, if you are a SuperFan, you can also enter in the SuperFan Forums, so you get two chances to win. [Smile]

One post per thread please. We'll randomly draw a name from each thread, and they will be our winners! One winner for sure will be a SuperFan! WooT!!!

Oh, be warned, I believe the DVD is Region 1, U.S. and Canada only. This DVD will probably NOT be viewable in other countries.

Giveaway ends February the 22nd at 22:22 Pacific time! Good luck!

Actually, many DVD players sold here in oz are muulti-zone, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I can definitely second that. It is an incredibly well-written and well-acted show. Definitely worth experiencing.

And not to be nitpicky, but he's not in an alternate universe, as the main page says; he's in a distant part of the galaxy.

Farscape is (was) a program with excellent effects, cool costuming and even better writing (you gotta love a show where the main character threatens to blow up a negotiation with a nuke and refers to it as "John Lee Hooker time."). Thanks to Nitro and Snaggy for bringing it to the attention of those who might never have seen it.

Ah, yes, Apple's stock split. It is a sensible move for them, since the stock is trading at a price level which discourages some investors from buying, and since the total number of shares outstanding is fairly modest... the jump in price has been painful to watch, since I had to sell my shares before the price headed straight up. <sigh>

Still, winning a DVD would sooth the pain <ahem>

Splitting stocks? Why, that's as impossible as splitting the atom. To quote the late, great Douglas Adams:

quote:
This is another example of the fact that The Hitch Hiker's Guide
to the Galaxy will employ anybody who wants to walk straight in
off the street and get ripped off, especially if they happen to
walk in off the street during the afternoon, when very few of the
regular staff are there.

There is a fundamental point here.

The history of The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy is one of
idealism, struggle, despair, passion, success, failure, and
enormously long lunch-breaks.

The earliest origins of the Guide are now, along with most of its
financial records, lost in the mists of time.

For other, and more curious theories about where they are lost,
see below.

Most of the surviving stories, however, speak of a founding
editor called Hurling Frootmig.

Hurling Frootmig, it is said, founded the Guide, established its
fundamental principles of honesty and idealism, and went bust.

There followed many years of penury and heart-searching during
which he consulted friends, sat in darkened rooms in illegal
states of mind, thought about this and that, fooled about with
weights, and then, after a chance encounter with the Holy
Lunching Friars of Voondon (who claimed that just as lunch was at
the centre of a man's temporal day, and man's temporal day could
be seen as an analogy for his spiritual life, so Lunch should

(a) be seen as the centre of a man's spiritual life, and

(b) be held in jolly nice restaurants), he refounded the Guide,
laid down its fundamental principles of honesty and idealism and
where you could stuff them both, and led the Guide on to its
first major commercial success.

He also started to develop and explore the role of the editorial
lunch-break which was subsequently to play such a crucial part in
the Guide's history, since it meant that most of the actual work
got done by any passing stranger who happened to wander into the
empty offices on an afternoon and saw something worth doing.

Shortly after this, the Guide was taken over by Megadodo
Publications of Ursa Minor Beta, thus putting the whole thing on
a very sound financial footing, and allowing the fourth editor,
Lig Lury Jr, to embark on lunch-breaks of such breathtaking scope
that even the efforts of recent editors, who have started
undertaking sponsored lunch-breaks for charity, seem like mere
sandwiches in comparison.

In fact, Lig never formally resigned his editorship - he merely
left his office late one morning and has never since returned.
Though well over a century has now passed, many members of the
guide staff still retain the romantic notion that he has simply
popped out for a ham croissant, and will yet return to put in a
solid afternoon's work.

Strictly speaking, all editors since Lig Lury Jr have therefore
been designated Acting Editors, and Lig's desk is still preserved
the way he left it, with the addition of a small sign which says
"Lig Lury Jr, Editor, Missing, presumed Fed".

Some very scurrilous and subversive sources hint at the idea that
Lig actually perished in the Guide's first extraordinary
experiments in alternative book-keeping. Very little is known of
this, and less still said. Anyone who even notices, let alone
calls attention to, the curious but utter coincidental and
meaningless fact that every world on which the Guide has ever set
up an accounting department has shortly afterwards perished in
warfare or some natural disaster, is liable to get sued to
smithereens.

I'd like a chance to win the Peacekeeper Wars! I'm new here and really appreciate the opportunity! :-D Love the site!

In response to all of you out there who are posting about 'newbies' simply joining for the opportunity to win something I'd like to say that if it weren't for this giveaway people like me would never have found this site. I heard of this place through three degrees of websites and can guarantee that had there not been a giveaway the link on that page wouldn't have been there and I wouldn't now be a registered user. Some people may just want a chance at the DVD but some will genuinely be attracted by it and say 'hey, this place is cool!' That's the category that I fall into.

Good luck to everyone in the giveaway! This place rocks! Congrats to Apple (I'm writing this on my brand new Powerbook... first time with an Apple computer)!

Oh, and for anyone who hasne't seen Farscape... do yourself a favor and BUY ALL FOUR SEASONS. By far the best sci fi series on television... ever (though I haven't seen Babylon 5... I heard that Farscape maintains the 'highest level' of quality more consistently than B5 however...).

Awesome.

Hey, a chance to win something! Good thing I looked in when I did! [Wink]

... If you pick me, don't send it right away: I need to order a new beanie sometime soon, so you can pack 'em up together. [crazy]

If it is free it is for me and I will take three. Or one, whatever the offer may be.

Hi,

I've been reading the Joy of Tech for a while now, and browsing the forums occasionally. I registered a while back and made an introduction post, but I never really got around to posting again after that (sorry, I guess I'm just a bit shy).

<serious question>
After looking at the heading of this thread for the past few days, I still haven't figured out why Apple's stock is AAPL instead of APPL. Can someone explain that, please?
</serious question>

i don't know how much time i have, but there's a long list of people i need to thank. first, i'd like to thank the academy of motion picture arts & sciences, sam weinstein and everyone over at miramax for taking a chance on an unknown kid from knoxville, tennessee. this proves that dreams really do come true. to my friends ali and brenda, denise and wanda over at central and everyone at the laugh factory..."i made it, kids". you're the best. to my parents glenn and rosemary who are in the audience tonight, i never would have made it without your support. to my childhood pet skippy the hampster and most of all the fans who kept encouraging me to enter and wouldn't let me give up, i say i love you all. fight global warming! goodnight!

what do you think? too over the top?
