As you no doubt are aware, the pop ups and pop-unders have been getting worse here, and the evil marketing folks have even figured out how to get around pop-up blockers in Safari and FireFox.
So as of today, I've blocked all pop-ups and unders from our Tribal Fusion ads in an attempt to stop these hellish things. What that means is better surfing for you, but less dough for Nitrozac and I to keep this place running.
So, pardon the plea, but I'm going to ask that those of you who aren't SuperFans please consider joining, or if that is out of the question, kindly consider ordering one of our fine offerings from our webstore or perhaps even a small donation. I grovel in your general direction, and thank you muchly in advance.
(Let me just say that without the Superfans we wouldn't be able to keep this place running, they have been amazing and we truly thank them for their continued support. )

Go ahead, keep the popups. It'll just filter out the noobs that haven't linked tribalfusion to /dev/null.

I was wondering about that. Yours is the only site that I visit that gets past safari.
Anyway, sorry I can't afford the nitrozanium fanship, but I'd keep visiting even if I got 10 times as many pop-ups!

Hey, Snaggy: about ads - please see your Gmail...

I always felt guilty blocking the ads on GC through Adblock - do you get money by requests for the images, number of links taken from the ads, or just a flat rate for the ads?
I don't know about the pop-ups/unders getting through Firefox as I haven't been using it recently - and still won't be until the end of the week, damn ip request process - but now I see they have in fact gone. This is a kind of good thing in some respects, but is a very bad thing if it leads to you guys being short of funds.
Honestly, I would love to go Superfan, but at the moment I cannot afford it. So if the only way I can contribute to GC is through pop-ups I'm willing to do that. Even if I will block them when Fiefox catches up

quote:When they were still enabled, they'd get through Firefox for me, but only for the first access of geekculture after starting Firefox. Any subsequent accesses wouldn't cause pop ups. It was only happening at home, too, under Firefox 0.9.3-5 for Linux, whereas Firefox 0.9.1 for Windows didn't seem to have the problem. Then again, maybe my Firefox at home was upgraded recently, since I'm tracking Debian sarge.

I've never gotten any. Maybe because I have everything from Tribal Fusion blocked. That goes for fastclick, qksrv, spinbox, doubleclick, valueclick, etc. too.

That goes for me too. I can't go Superfan, though it would be neat. So, if the ads keep this site going, go for it.
I will soldier on through them better than I would go without the virtual friendship of the fellow geeks here and the good natured humor of Joy Of Tech.

I would become a superfan too, but being that I have to come up with first and last month's rent and move and deal with hookup costs, and moving truck, and all that other CRAP over the next while, I'm having a hard enough time putting gas in my new car. :\
However, if I can be of help in any other way, I'll happily do it. Whether it be some hosting for you (I run a hosting business on a 10Mbit fibre), programming work or any other help in any way, you know how to contact me.

My popup blocker can't even detect popups on its own. I have to tell it what to close. This also means that if I see an unwanted popup or linked website, I don't have to see it again.

OK, I am a total newbie here but I haven't had any pop-ups, unders, through hoops or anything else... when exactly did you "kill" their presence on this site? Was it before I joined up? How were they getting past the "block pop-ups" dodad? (Yo, I'm a graphics pro, not a code hacker OK?)
I use Safari under 10.3.5 on G4 400MHz (home) and G5 2GHz DP (work).
I am enjoying this board so far and if I keep on getting the level of sensible/amusing/insightful interaction I've encountered to date I will genuinely consider some form of "cash support" be it superfan subs or just an occasional donation (Do you guys accept PayPal? I guess you do... and if not, why not?)

What kind of return do you guys get on the Amazon.co.uk affiliation? Because that might be a good way for me to contribute..
Posted by Snaggy (Member # 123) on October 07, 2004, 14:00:
Stibbons, our referral rate is around 4% or 5% an Amazon sale, Personal computers (desktops and laptops) have referral fees capped at $25 per item. Electronics and software is where we can make a few dollars per item.
Overall though, we don't make very much via our Amazon links, usually just a few bucks a month, so if you can remember to buy via our link that would help.

I'll probably have quite a big order to make soon so I'll see how it goes
