For anyone who knows the history of 20th Century police states, there are 2 phrases that have an ominous ring to them.
'Papers Please', and 'Disappeared'.

The current aussie government has an obsession with 'Border Security' - for over a year now, they've been 'disappearing' refugees, maybe they've been taken to one of the offshore concentration camps, maybe they've been towed back to the country they fled from, maybe something worse, we're not allowed to know.

Then two months ago, the government merged the Customs Service, and the Immigration Department, renamed them 'Border Force' and issued them with black paramilitary uniforms. At the same time, the veil of secrecy surrounding their activities was turned into a thick black blanket. Long prison terms await any whistleblowers.

Today, Border Force announced they would be conducting an 'operation' in downtown Melbourne. Backed by state and federal police, they would be document checking "any individual we cross paths with" (that's a quote from the press release). The obvious implication was that any foreign looking people whose papers weren't in order would be 'disappeared'.

Well, the people of Melbourne were having none of it.

When the jackboot boys arrived, they were met by a hastily assembled angry mob, and soon found themselves barricaded inside the main railway station, where they remained until the government backed down.

The government's now in full historical-revisionism mode, claiming it was all about unpaid parking fines, or littering, or transport fare evasion. Just what any of that has to do with Border Force is a question they're not keen to answer.

We won.
This time.
I'm proud of the people of my home city for taking a stand, but I'm also starting to feel really, really glad I have dual citizenship, this is no longer the Australia I once knew.

TFD. Here in Michigan, we only saw Border Patrol agents at the crossings to Canada. Now they are patrolling the major thoroughfares of the state. Has or is Canada becoming dangerous?

Canada - really? Most of us love Canada [hearts] , or for some US folks, are thoroughly indifferent to our kind neighbors to the North.

I just don't know when it will. Maybe with the summer drawing to a close, people will start to get serious? Alas, rumor has it that apart from his bombastic tripe, he is getting more serious about doing some things he's supposed to do as a candidate.

Does he having staying power? Is that actually a good thing? (Will he either force people to move to ration stances...or at least give the Dems a fighting chance?)
