On a related note, I remember in the 1980's, the Thatcher government in the UK introduced a new 'national security' law.

One of the UK TV networks made a documentary about how draconian the new law was, and then they weren't allowed to show it.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse, but you aren't allowed to know what the law is. [shake head]

It's frustrating how often people don't even seem to bother researching the law related to their own jobs until it's too late. I guess if the courts are going to give them a break for ignorance, it's better to stay with that strategy, though. [shake head]

This is why I find this video so informative. And mind you I am the son of a retired police officer and I agree 100% with this video.

Frankly, while they guy may have been in the clear to record, as have others...it's just not a /smart/ thing to do. You're probably letting 'them' win by giving up and not recording, but do you _really_ want to piss off a cop? Is getting thrown in jail for what should have been a procedural stop worth it?

If it puts a jackbooted bully-boy in his place, yes.

In that case, yes.

But in cases like this police temper-tantrum, it's helpful to have video evidence of police behaviour that would otherwise be 'unbelievable'.

FWIW, that was captured on the police car camera. They totally did themselves in.

Objection! Objection! Objection!

Your Honor I want all evidence suppressed and charges dropped on the grounds that all evidence is private and cannot be made public!

"Who says?" asks the Judge.

Why Mr. Police and Mister DA! They say this is all a private conversation! It is not a public matter! It is not law enforcement!

"Hmmm ... Mr. Police? Mr. DA? Public or Private?" asks the judge.

"Harrumph! Uh! Duh!" Says Mr. Police

"Harrumph! Uh! Duh!" Says Mr. DA!

"Mr. Defense lawyer is correct!" Says the Judge. "A public person enforcing a law in public is not a private act! Taping is not a crime here! Case dismissed!"

Mr. Police is not the bad guy. He is just a bully. That is what all Police are! They are not your friend! No! No! No! Police get paid to arrest!

The DA is a professional demon! So don't be silly. He is a lawyer! First we kill all the lawyers! And he is a politician. Second we kill all the politicians! He is a bad guy twice!

The real bad guy is the Defense Lawyer! He/She blew it!

When good defense lawyers get these cases, they don't go this far.

Oh! Oh! Oh! What else was missed?

Is the tape evidence of a crime? A police was there arresting! Yes! Yes! Yes! Evidence of a crime!

Destroying evidence! Conspiracy to destroy evidence!

What do you think?

Mr. Geek 2U!
