The school the druidlings go to has an 'Accelerated Program' - aka Gifted Student Program. It's kind of a big deal, their alumni list reads like a who's who of high achieving aussies, politicians, scientists, supreme court judges, even a Nobel Prize winner.

Getting in isn't easy. Every year hundreds of the best and brightest grade 6 kids from around Australia (yes, families relocate from other states for this) sit an exam, hoping to be one of the lucky 52 selected. Then there are interviews, both with the parents, the kids, and their classroom teachers, to make sure they have The Right Stuff.

Druidling V2.0f didn't try out for it at the time, because she wasn't interested, and I didn't try to talk her into it, because I didn't want to put my little girl through that grinder. She was 11. Let kids be kids.

Anyway, entrance to the program's a one-chance-only thing, apply in last year of primary school, enter in first year of high school, no chance to transfer in later.

Or so the school website claims...

On Thursday the program coordinator took Druidling V2.0f aside and said "You're wasting your talents in this class, how'd you like to transfer into the Accelerated Program?"

Did I mention that's supposed to be impossible?
They're breaking the rules for her (and 2 other kids who got the same offer on the same day)

Being the sensible girl that she is, she asked for time to consider her answer, and we've spent the last couple of days carefully going over the pros and cons, with me trying my best to be even handed, (because I don't want to be one of those pushy parents) while really, really hoping she'd decide to go for it.

Well, she's decided, she's going for it.

If you watch 'The History Of NASA' backwards, it's about a space agency that has no manned spaceflight capability, then does low-orbit flights, then lands on the Moon.
