Hey guys, it's been forever! I've only poked in here and there in the last couple of years. Seems like the whole place is a lot quieter than it used to be.

I have finally gotten a job with paid time off (woo hoo!) and so for my tenth wedding anniversary ( [Eek!] ) I am going to be headed to Istanbul for a week! [Big Grin]

I already know we're going to check out the Hagia Sophia and the Black Sea, and maybe try to see some Turkish Oil Wrestling. I've got a book for other ideas of what to do while we're there, but does anyone have any personal recommendations? I've got 6 weeks to plan it. [Razz]

Such a reception, I feel like a celebrity! I don't know much about the wresting, so I have no idea if there are women's leagues. [blush]

I will definitely have to keep an eye out for geeky buskers. [Smile]

I was in Istanbul for my spring break vacation a month ago.

It was cold and rainy but it was ok because there is enough to do inside.

My best recomendation, go see the cistern that was used in the film " from russia with love" it is near the Hagia Sofie ( the most famous thing in istanbul) and the cistern is uber geeky and cool. ( Find the head of medusa down there)

..ANd, I always thought that bakclava was greek, but they make better Bakclava and other similar deserts that they do in greece. though the turkish delights I tried were not very good. But the Bakclava, amazing.

it is best had with a turkish coffee. definately to be tried.

Do you have a date in Constantinople?

She'll be waiting in Istanbul.

Oh I've had Turkish baklava before at a Mediterranean restaurant near here. It was sooooooo good. It is definitely on my list. And thanks for other things to see near the Sofia.

I was there about twenty years ago. You would be wise to take GI drugs and stuff -- Turkish Tummy can be a pain in the... err... travel plans. Never drink the tap water -- avoid drinks with ice -- they use tap water to make the ice cubes, and therein lies many an hour on the doughnut in Granny's greenhouse, as it were. You will be hassled everywhere you go to buy rugs and stuff -- get your "leave me the Hell alone" face ready. ;-)

The fish is good, though -- if you like fish. Oh, and careful with the Rakki -- it's so cheap, you won't believe it, but it has been known to turn normal folk into wild loonies, dancing on tables and whatnot. Most importantly -- have fun! It's a beautiful country with superb meatballs and very friendly people (although you may have to leave Istanbul to see just how warm and spiffing they are!) :-)

Shameless plug. (Please forgive me.)

Barcelona is great.
Toledo also.
Lisbon (Portugal) is a real gem, loved it.
