It was druidling V2.0f's 8th birthday the other day, and we let her decide what she'd like to do for the party.
While other little girls her age are having their parties at McDonalds, the zoo, or the local playground, she chose a trip to Scienceworks and the planetarium.
She and 12 of her friends spent the day ooohing and aaahing at the pretty star pictures on the big planetarium dome, and playing with all the hands-on science exhibits at the childrens science museum.

Although Scienceworks is fairly close to Casa Del Druid, many of the kids had never been there before, it's just not something non-geeky parents think of for a family outing. Since the party, several of the parents have sought us out to tell us what a great time the kids had, and said they'll be taking their kids again, so I feel I've done my bit to spread the word of geek-evangelism.

Actually, the cost was very down-to-earth.
Admission to Scienceworks is free for kids, the only thing we had to pay for was the planetarium, $3.50/kid. The specialist 'kids party' places (basically a warehouse full of playground equipment and picnic tables) charge a lot more than that, for a much more forgettable experience.
Taking the family to museums and galleries here used to be quite expensive, then one of them tried cutting their prices substantially, and found that what they lost in admission fees, they more than made up for in increased sales in the café and gift shop. The others quickly followed suit.

Quite cool, TFD. As a small lad my father would take us all to The Museum of Science and Industry, which is my favorite, even though I haven't been there in years (bad me). We would also go the Field Museum to see all the dead and stuffed animals. Not my idea of fun. Although, the armory room was damn cool. And the Egyptian exhibit was also pretty neat (mummified cat, now there's an idea).
It's good to know that small children still have an interest in something that doesn't start with 'i', Wii, or 'X'. But, hey, who am I to talk. Like I said, it's been years (okay, okay, decades really) since I've set foot in a museum. But, my drug of choice starts with Mac, and it gives me more information than I know what to do with.
