Now that Pamela and I are no longer having orthopedic trouble...we're having car trouble.

Since the beginning of the week, my car had been randomly stalling out while driving, and, on Wednesday night, it refused to start at all. I had to get Pamela to pick me up from work, and I drove her car to work on Thursday. That morning, I found the car would start, so I tried to drive it to the repair shop I'd located on that side of town. It stalled on the way there, and I couldn't get it started again, so I had to call the repair shop and have it towed. (Before that, I had to get it out of traffic; a passerby helped me push it into the parking lot of a nearby Winchell's Donuts, where the tow truck later picked it up.)

The car remained at the shop overnight, and, finally, yesterday, it was fixed. The culprit? The ignition switch; it had burned up and wasn't making proper contact anymore. The tab? $450. I paid them off, moved my car out front where I could get it later, then drove Pamela's car home to pick her up so we could go out and get my car.

On our way there, coming off the freeway offramp, Pamela rear-ended someone! Her car got the worst of it, with part of the right front fender and bumper stove in and the right headlight knocked out of alignment, but it was still drivable. The other car got a couple of cracks in the rear bumper. No one was hurt, and a Lakewood cop was right there to take an accident report and issue Pamela a ticket for "careless driving." But she was very upset afterwards, though she managed to hold it together long enough to get me to my car and get herself back home, while I drove my now-fixed car home.

Oh, and, to top that off, both the tow-truck driver and mechanic advised me that my brakes needed repair, too, so today I took the car to a brake shop. They had to replace the front pads, front rotors, and a couple other parts, in addition to purging and refilling the brake system--oh, and they also noticed that my serpentine belt was cracked, so I had that replaced, too. (You know how cars used to have belts for the alternator, the power steering, the air conditioner, and all that? Well, in modern engine design, all those belts have been replaced with one big belt, dubbed the "serpentine belt." If it breaks, you're screwed.) The tab? $500. Just what we didn't need....

So, my car is now fixed (for the moment) after a massive expenditure, Pamela's car needs body work, and she's got a court date to deal with the ticket. We just can't win for losing, now can we? [Roll Eyes] [Mad] [shake head]

A coworker of mine tells me that the city attorney's office will probably offer to plea-bargain the ticket down to something in the neighborhood of $160 and 2 points. She'll probably be OK, and they'll just tell her to "go forth and be careless no more," or something like that.

Meanwhile, she's working out a deal with the guy whose car she hit--who happens to know someone who does body repair work at decent prices.

That sucks, man. Best of luck with all of that. I'd do your brakes for ya if you lived nearby. [Wink]

I appreciate that, DNM. My father used to work in a brake shop himself, while he was going to college. This time around, I had Brakes Plus, a smallish local chain, do them. They spotted the cracking serpentine belt, but actually gave me a break on the charges for that because they initially installed the wrong belt and had to spend extra time to put the right one on.

It may not be all that bad. Since we're longtime Allstate customers, they won't jack our rates just because of this claim...and our $500 deductible only applies to Pamela's repairs. We may come out of all this better than we deserve to. But, if there's any money left after all this goes down, I'm going to have some other things on my car given a thorough going-over...
