Sorry, I just needed to post this somewhere. A level results today - 4 A's! Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, plus an A in AS (one year of a two year A level for non-UK geeks) Further Maths means that I get into my first choice uni [crazy] I'm still in shock [Smile]

I agree with supergoo, but then again, the US system isn't exactly the most logical entity.

Bloody good show on those, old bean.*

Hehehe. [Razz]

I don't quite get how the American system works, but basically the year that you start as age 11 is Year 7. Nothing happens for three years till Year 10, when you start the year as age 14 and you start two year courses called G.C.S.E.'s in all the core subjects (Science, Maths, English) and get to choose which subjects you do (usually one Tech. subject, one Language, one Arts and one Humanities.) Then you hit year 12, or Sixth Form, and A-levels start. They go on for two years, and most people pick three or sometimes four subjects. I am insane, and want to do five. [Smile]

It sounds to me a bit like our (US's) AP system, with some differences. Basically, AP is a college-level course that the academically oriented kids take (usually one in our 2nd to last year, and 2 or 3 in our last year of high school). If you do well (1-5, 5 is excellent, 1 is crappulent), you can get college credit, take honors courses, etc., depending on the school you go to; schools like MIT, OTOH, don't care because they assume everyone's taken AP Calculus and so on.

I'm particularly proud of my school - in the two AP-level Calculuses, we score far above average (it's done by a curve, but we tend to get mostly 4s and 5s, with a handful of 3s and one or two 2s a year). Similarly with AP Biology and Physics; I'm not sure about Chemistry. Our English courses, on the other hand, suck.

I did well enough on the AP statistics exam to not have to take a third semester of math as required by my major. However, when I decided to minor in chemistry, I ended up taking that third semester anyways. I'm glad I did. I owe a lot to the McLaurin Series. My biggest regret is not taking more math. If only I'd known I'd end up a crystallographer...

Heh, nice one Stibbons!

I'm just starting AS Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Almost got the same as Spoonie in GCSE, only instead of two Bs, I had another A. [Smile]

AS levels? GCSEs? What the smeg are they? In my day we 'ad A-levels - real exams, lemme tell ya! None of this trendy essay rubbish. We 'ad fifteen exams in one day - an they were all twelve hours long, including the practicals in which we 'ad to build a scramjet, or a working fusion reactor. An if you failed to unify the fundamental forces of nature in the theory test, they'd shoot you in the head with an elephant gun until it really hurt. An they didn't give us any fancy pens - we 'ad to use our own blood, if you ran out you 'ad to make do with dissolved pigment from your own skin. Once my mate Charlie was caught differentiating an elliptic function without doing so by first principles - an they killed him - twice! Education today, huh? Next thing you know they'll let 'em do their exams without blindfolds! [Smile]

Me, I've got GCSE's, but because they didn't fully revise the system, I've got an additional O-level as well, (MEI additional maths) because I took GCSE maths a year early. We were also told off for laughing in the maths aural exam.

You were LUCKY! We lived for three months in rolled up newspaper in septic tank! We used to get up every morning, at six o'clock and clean the newspaper, go to work down the mill, fourteen hours a day, week in, week out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home, our dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt! </monty_python>
