I'm sure you're all familiar with the game...

 -

The movie seems to be completely unrelated, but the movie website allows you to play the game, so the name isn't just a coincidence.

The movie itself looks like a nearly plot-free special effects and explosions type movie. Not a bad thing if you're in the mood for it and your don't expect depth in the characters or plot.

You can always pretend. Other than the fact that it contains military ships, the movie looks like it's about as related to Battling Tops as it is to Battleship.

I'm dragging this thread kicking and screaming into 2012 just to note that my nephews scored Battleship (the game) for Christmas. I played a couple rounds with them and my brother-in-law.

Milton Bradley has really crapped the game up. They jammed both grids onto a single, hexagonal, vertical plane. Your ships are either on the top or bottom, depending on which side of the board you get, which was confusing at first - "wait, what? mine are in the blue? but my blue is on the bottom, where's yours?!" Plus they added islands, which really just make things easier because a ship can't be on land, some kind of triangular "weapons platform", and a "captured man" who is on an island and has to be rescued after you sink all your opponent's ships. Really? Can't kids just play a simple game anymore?

Your nephews wound up with the "improved" version, but the original version is still available.

On the bright side, there seem to be player made variants and downloadble/printable replacement maps here (in the files section).
