Grrr he really did it! [Mad] Anakin's Force ghost is now played by Hayden Christensen instead of Sebastian Shaw. At least he is still old when his mask is removed by Luke and not replaced with Hayden, but still...

PB, i know exactly howyou're thinking... I LOVE these movies, but I love 'em as they were, not as how they've been tinkered.

/me wished I had those original laser discs.

Just buy the Firefly boxed set instead, you won't regret it [Smile]

For his greed in putting out so many versions of the Star Wars movies and revising them too often, perhaps we should start calling him Lucas the Hut. -

Hmm, if only they'd left the changes as cosmetic, not stupid ones that affect plot or characterisation.

I like the end of his review

quote:
After all my bitching and moaning about getting these films on DVD over the years... my occasional tantrums and frequent soap box proclamations... am I finally a happy Star Wars fan? You know, I don't even know what the words "happy Star Wars fan" mean anymore. But am I secretly giddy that I finally have these films on DVD? Yeah, I am. I hate myself a little for it, but such is the curse of Star Wars geeks everywhere. No matter how angry and jaded I get, I still get chills when that logo crashes across my screen and that familiar John Williams fanfare blares over my speakers. Yeah, I got a bit of the goosebumps when I found out that Episode III was going to be called Revenge of the Sith. And yeah, I'll go to whatever crap movie the Episode III teaser trailer is attached to just for a couple minutes of eXtreme geek-out time. Don't even try to pretend that a lot of you don't feel the exact same way. We're a pretty pathetic bunch aren't we?

He's right isn't he? You all know you'll be buying these anyway don't you?

He's right we will buy them.

I'm betting that we won't see an original print, ever. Unless he releases something special in 2007 (30 anniversary).
I mean come on DVDs can hold a lot of data. They can easily put the original movie on back-to-back with the most recent version.

That end picture does get me though. Surely a 'force ghost' is an imprint of when they died. Annakin was redeemed before he died so why not use the original actor.

I know I'm going to buy this but it would be nice to see it as the original cut.

There are a couple of online petitions to urge Lucas to release the original print. He knows that people will buy it, so what does he have to lose?

Lucas the Hutt? Have you seen George's neck lately?

We won't see an original release again, ever. George doesn't consider those films "finished" or representative of his vision.

I'll probably buy the DVDs, if I have the cash. I'm not making it a priority. I still have VHS copies buried away of the THX remasters, original version. I have the Special Editions and I watch those to preserve the remasters, but I'm just not the fan I used to be.

Now if George made the one change I wanted to see, I'd buy the DVDs as soon as they were released. Chewie deserved a medal at the end of ANH too, dammit!

These changes make me glad I still have the THX remastered LaserDiscs, now I just need to get a DV cam or converter so I can transfer them before Laser rot starts sjowing up on them.

As far as the new DVDs I was really thinking of getting them. Then I saw the confirmation of the changes and now I'm just not sure if I will even consider buying them now.

Zwilnik - I already bought Firefly when it came out, can't wait for the movie!

I know! What the hell is the deal with that neck.....I have never seen anything like it....not too sure if it is how he cuts his beard or if he has some freaky glandular thing going on.

The most glaringly strange alteration to me is the young Anakin at the end of RotJ, it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Either drop in Ewan and a younger Yoda or leave it be, but don't mix ages. That's kind of perliously close to messing with plot and mythology.

The rest I'm neutral about (speeder, background changes to Courescant) or actually like (Jabba do-over and the eyebrow thing - singed off I assume as a result of the upcoming duel), or are flat out glad about (finally fixing those lame ass saber glows for Obi and Darth's duel in ANH).

Honestly I don't really get too messed up about the fx changes, for the most part I've enjoyed them. But I mean if something like whether Han shoots first or not affects how much you like a movie it's time to take a step back, geek or not.

But it does make a difference to Hans character and his transformation throughout the trilogy.

Well... When it comes down to it, it's just not star wars anymore.

I'll stick with my VHS boxed trilogy, thank you very much.

And I was so looking forward to it.

Well the DVDs are out now. (And yeah, I got them. I just finished watching episode IV.) Somehow I think that Scott Kurtz may have been looking at this thread when he wrote this strip.

I'm still undecided about the whole DVD thing. I recognize they're George's movies, but I also believe that movies, in a way, are a historical record and shouldn't be touched unnecessarily. So I will only leave this quote. Seems appropriate.

But in the special edition VHS (I haven't gotten around to getting the DVD yet) He said that it was unfinished and he wanted to go back and do stuff with it. I think it's a good idea. I will deffinatly watch them with an open mind that the director of this classic and very good movie is trying to grasp his original vision of how the movie should look.

One of the more reasonably priced Aussie sites for getting the DVDs ( here) says " Please Note - This is a limited release and will be discontinued by Fox before Christmas! Order now to secure your copy!"

What's up with that? I haven't seen that anywhere else, is something funny going on there?

I could agree with him if he was simply making a directors cut (well he could only do that to IV) from deleted footage, alternate cuts etc...

Look at the Indiana Jones DVDs the only CGI effects done to them besides cleanup was on the 1st film to remove the reflection of Indy in the Plexiglas protecting the actors from the snake. This did not alter the story or add creatures that could not have been done when they were filmed.

What next? Go back to any classic film and add CGI and replace actors in scenes because we did not have the technology to do something back in the 1940s?

Lucas better not be starting a trend [devil wand]

I may be wrong, but wasn't it Lucas who was bitching about how wrong it is to colourizing The Three Stooges?
