It's a half-assed apology, but an apology none the less

That's a pretty lame apology.

The sad thing is, he's basically alluding to something he should have known from Day One - I'm pretty sure the Bible says a thing or two to the effect that 'man shouldn't deign to judge others, or presume to know $DEITY's will.' I could be wrong, but I think there's probably something else in there about being able to say when 'judgement day' will come - after all, aren't we supposed to live life like it could end at any moment? Being able to know 'that day' would give us an awfully unfair advantage by that logic. Ergo, shame on Harold.

(And double shame on him for rooking people into wasting their savings on his bollocks.)

Don't be too hard on Mr Camping, he's just following in the footsteps of JC himself.

There are several passages in the bible where JC unambiguously states the end times will happen within the lifetimes of the listeners.

If you watch 'The History Of NASA' backwards, it's about a space agency that has no manned spaceflight capability, then does low-orbit flights, then lands on the Moon.

A lot of that's assuming you take "Kingdom of God" to mean "end times". Not all do.

When you start getting into all the variations of Kingdom Theology, the whole rapture thing rapidly takes a back seat, even in the versions that believe it will happen.

The Christians of the time clearly did, there's a bit in the bible when they have the "Hey guys, everyone who heard that is dead now, WTF???" discussion.

That's how they came up with the other interpretations, as a way of not admitting to themselves that the prophesy was wrong. Mr Camping has been demonstrating the same kind of thinking, absolute certainty before the due date, creative re-interpretation once the deadline is missed.

A long, long tradition.

True, but, in the case of Jesus, there's also quite a tradition of "Oh, wait. Maybe he didn't mean that the way we interpreted it." Even within the Gospels, that happens multiple times.
