I have been following this for a couple of days.
Sadly, I knew things are tough worldwide, but these kinds of riots in the UK honestly never crossed my mind.
I hope the best for the bystanders caught up in all of this.

Honestly, I'm floored to hear of this happening in England. WTF, mates?
Apparently, this mostly has to do with 'a few bad apples' piling onto a peaceful protest, but how the hell have so many people taken leave of their common sense, morals, dignity and respect for others/property? Allegations have it that the local youth are more disenfranchised due to lack of funding for program[me]s, but that's a pitiful excuse for this behavior. Not having a job doesn't justify this; especially not in a country that does have opportunities, sparse as they may be now.
To the locals across the pond - keep calm and carry on...and be safe! ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I'm not, but then I spent a year working within sight of Old Trafford football stadium, so nothing a group of young English men does would surprise me.
Disappoint? Yes. Surprise? No.
It's a tiny minority, of course, just like the football hooligans, but it only takes a few to spoil things for everyone.

I am afraid it is pretty much a rerun of the last time we had such events back in the 80s - Police shot a guy (I have no idea of the circumstances) "upset" locals enraged with police went on the rampage (this stuff happens everywhere I am sure you agree)... Then media cover it and a lot of malcontents take up the idea of "starting a riot and looting a load of sh*t" - i.e. the usual criminal fraternity see a chance to have a weekend bender without even trying to be subtle, why burgle when you can just smash in a window and make off with all the luxury goods?
Disappointing indeed - but like TFD I know that there are always a few who just can't wait for an excuse.

i read tonight that 10k police would be deployed, with possible authorization to use rubber bullets. I have no idea how many coppers are normally on the beat in London, how big of an increase is that? I sure hope it helped settle things down some.

A friend of mine's sister worked at the Reeves Furniture store that got burned to the ground after over 100 years in business. Makes you want to cry and will they be able to rebuild.

I wonder if the riot act was read?
quote: Our Sovereign Lord the King chargeth and commandeth all persons, being assembled, immediately to disperse themselves, and peaceably to depart to their habitations, or to their lawful business, upon the pains contained in the act made in the first year of King George, for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies. God Save the King!

Shocking footage from Manchester. The nerve of some people.
On a much, much more serious note, I read today that the police are raiding houses and Cameron supposedly asked the cops if it would be helpful to shut down/restrict social networking sites.

You don't understand, we're good they're bad. So, by definition, what we do is good and what they do is bad.

I'm quite uncertain how to process this, courtesy of b3ta: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz2q4Yb7Vw4
As to Ash's overly simplified comment, I think one can readily recognize that Libyans fighting Qaddafi (or pick your Arab Spring country du jour) is wholly different than a bunch of thugs laying waste to a (mostly) free country.

While I don't want to underplay the seriousness of all this, right now we are in the middle of one of those unedifying moral panics. Our right wing tabloid press is screaming headlines like "Sweep the scum off our streets", and led by the popular press our politicians are al saying how they are shocked, shocked that such a thing could happen here, and that the perpetrators are "criminals, pure and simple" who must be punished with the full force of the law. To me anyway their moral lectures ring rather hollow, given their recent past .
For a more considered view, this piece rings true for me. Laurie Penny also makes some good points. There is also a good first hand account here

Thanks for the extra perspective, Callipygous!
To me, one of the most disappointing quotes (featured on the 2nd link) was: "Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you."
Regrettably that blows away my desire to say, "In a free country such as England, there are appropriate ways to voice your concerns to your elected officials." Oops, some of them tried that already.
I do suspect that the über-austerity folks may get wiped out in the polls, though!

So, if you live in a 'free' society where the government uses all the same methods to crush dissent that the nasty dictatorships use, just what does 'freedom' mean?

A damned good question.
I should note that despite my personal views, I don't think the social networks should be shut down. My remarks were mostly aimed at the 'good vs. bad' aspect of things. Good old-fashioned police work ought to be able to prevail, with adequate manpower. Adults standing up to these kids wouldn't hurt, either. (I get the impression that's starting to happen, in re: "riotcleanup.")
