In the spirit of post partisan mutual respect and reconciliation, I made a resolution not to post anything about wingnuts. I'm a foreigner so it's rude, and we in the UK have nothing much to be smug about. One shouldn't mock the afflicted, they are a target that's just too easy, etc etc etc

So sorry all, but this just made me laugh out loud. I had to share.

____ 1966/1970 There were Gays in the US Navy (gasp) How they are treated depends on the Petty Officer of the Barracks or the NonCom Officer of the Barracks, if he is a homophobe then there could be problems. While I was POB I had frank talks with two of my shipmates about what I would do about non consentual contact. We had one incident that resulted in damage to the building, the two were both charged with fighting in the barracks, did their extra duty and repair of the damage, no other charges, I did change the barracks muster plan to keep these two apart.

leaving aside the politics of the matter, the 'analysis' of the statistics by the FRC's Senior Fellow for Policy Studies is laughably inept.

If you watch 'The History Of NASA' backwards, it's about a space agency that has no manned spaceflight capability, then does low-orbit flights, then lands on the Moon.

I will assert, without proof, that Larry Niven had it right when he wrote these words in his story "How the Heroes Die" (reprinted in Tales of Known Space):
quote:
"You know, lots of people get a little sick to their stomachs about homosexuals. I do myself, and it hurt to see it happening to Lew. But there's only one type who goes looking for 'em so he can beat up on 'em."

Carter frowned.

"Latents. Guys who think they might turn queer themselves if you gave 'em the opportunity. They can't stand queers around because queers are temptation."

Food for thought...

And it looks like Larry Niven may be being proved right, as this NYT op-ed notes:
quote:
[...] there is a growing body of research that supports the notion that homophobia in some men could be a reaction to their own homosexual impulses. Many heterosexual men see this, and they don’t want to be associated with it. It’s like being antigay is becoming the old gay. Not cool.
The article is worth your time to read.

People are often quickest to get self-righteous, judgemental, and even outright disgusting about that which they are most insecure about. It's almost as if they are, through their lecturing and ranting and raving, painting a target right on their weak spots. And some of the worst offenders in this regard are in the homophobe camp. My pity for them is tempered by the damage they do, but they do deserve some iota of compassion. It must really suck to spend your life wallowing in such self-hate.

From TFA: "...more straight soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines will be fellated in their sleep against their will."

'Cos, yeah, that would be...err.. bad, I imagine.
