I know that many GCers won't be directly involved with the UK political system, but I thought it might be worth throwing this question out in case we have any politics students amongst us.

So - here is my question:

Does being a cabinet minister prevent an MP signing an Early Day Motion?

The reason I ask is that I recently asked my MP why she had never signed an EDM ever....which seemed odd when a key part of her job is to have opinions on issues! She wrote to me stating that she is not allowed to sign EDMs because she is a member of the cabinet.

Is this horseshit? Or was she telling the truth?

I had to look up EDM's on wikipedia to find out what they are, but now that I know, it makes sense that a cabinet minister can't sign one.

EDM's are basically an avenue for the unwashed masses in parliament (government backbenchers as well as the opposition) to raise issues they feel are being ignored by the government. For a cabinet minister to support one could look like a breach of cabinet solidarity.

That sounds very plausible - I can see the sense in that suggestion.

I have now e-mailed my useless, self-serving, nest-feathering Member of Parliament to ask why she didn't sign a single EDM in the ten years between becoming an MP and joining the cabinet.

Thank you for your suggestion, TFD - I was wary about showing my ignorance of my own country's political system.

I have one for my country men. Why does the USA have Secret Courts?

My understanding is that a person may be indited, tried and jailed, and never have a public hearing.

That, of course, would be how she got a job on the cabinet.

Zwilnik - of course......Why didn't I see it!

Ms Blears' rise to the cabinet is a direct result of never having expressed an opinion of her own!

Damn, I wish we had a proper Labour Party. [Frown]
