As I listened to the news on the way to work this morning, I heard that this years Black Friday sales were better than the past four years. This year alone they were up 7.2%, that is HUGE! I thought we were in a recession? Where is the money coming from? I mean, I am sure if people are charging it, they can just ask for a bail out as well.

Stores were also giving much bigger discounts on Black Friday this year than in previous years. It might just be that people were doing all of their shopping on Friday and skipping the rest of the shopping season. We won't get a good picture of what's going on until after it's over I think.

True, but with these insane sales, people who are trying to find ways to do more with less are likely capitalizing on heavy discounts. To me, the really stupid thing with these discounts is that the margins are shaved big time, and I really don't see the retailers thriving long term.

I'd like to say that I don't care about that, as I loathe this obsession with consumption...but I recognize that it's still an important part of our economy. As such, I'd rather sensible expectations were held, and sales that make sense were held...at sane hours, and not inviting mayhem and bloodshed.

These figures can be skewed by accounting methods.

For example, are they accruing medical, funeral and flower sales for those people who were killed or wounded during this season's opener?
