I, too, am trying to get into MIT (I'll be applying early next year (my senior year)). One thing I'd suggest, of course, is to write well on the application's essay. This means spelling, punctuating, and capitalizing things correctly (no offense, but you didn't do this that much in your post).

In my app, I'm going to try and show the other things I do that don't directly relate to math, science, and such (you know, the whole "well-rounded" thing). I just hope I don't overdo it and make them think I'd be better off at a liberal arts college or something like that. ^_^

You're a freshman, it seems, so I'd say take the hardest classes you can (you won't get very far taking a bunch of blowoff classes) and be sure to befriend a few teachers who can write some hella-good recommendations for you when your senior year rolls around.

I got in, and I'm going next year. Agreed, it's the non-math/science stuff that'll often get you in. Probably did in my case; everyone applying to MIT is good with math, but I had all sorts of political and public speaking activities on my resume, too.

The other thing is, definitely figure out during your Junior year who you want to write your recommendation. You need, IIRC, two teachers. Maybe a non-teacher community member too - I'm not sure. And cultivate a good relationship with your counselor; not only is it useful in high school, but s/he will be filling out a form on who you are both as a student, and personally.

Take lot's of math and science classes and get an average of a 3.9 GPA. On your SATs shoot for no lower than a 1450 and on your ACT shoot for no lower than a 30. SAT II study for, otherwise you will get lower scores. Other than that good luck. MIT has been my dream since I was 11 and I doubt I am getting in this year either. [Frown]
