For along time I have been watching the Simpsons and thought, even though they never say what state the Simpsons live in, they have mentioned some states that they don't live in.
I have decided to figure out which state they do live in by process of elimination, I have made this page on my website to do this, on my own I have been able to eliminate 7 states, and I am now I am requesting the help of any Simpsons fans out there to help me eliminate more states so that one day we will know, what state the Simpsons live in.
Why am I doing this?
Why not?

It's simple, the Simpsons live in Matt Groening's head. Unless you take into account that as a cartoon, the Simpson's are subject to the laws of cartoon logic, you may never find an answer to this question.
But I can help you eliminate a few states anyways.
1) They have access to the ocean at the edge of town. (references: Homer house sits for Mr Burns and takes the yacht out; any episode featuring the Springfield Squidport; the sugar smuggling episode)
2) Springfield gets snow (references: any Christmas episode)
These (1) and (2), eliminate any state on the gulf of Mexico.
3) The closest they have gotten to revealing what state they are in is when they were pointing vaguely to the middle of a map of the US. Of course, everyones head got in the way. (reference: Apu becomes a citizen)
4) It's a cartoon, dude! They could be anywhere.

Hope this helps.

the whole point of the simpsons not saying where they are from is a running gag, groening purposefully contradicts himself describing where they are or makes it impossibly hard to guess

Sheesh! Discovering the home state of the Simpsons is a classic geek problem, like computing the next umpteen digits of pi, or overclocking your microwave oven. Don't let the wet blankets with their disparaging posts deter you from your quest! (And do keep us posted on your results.)

I saw him in an interveiw a few years ago, and then he said that Springfield is a representation of typical US cities.

It would be eisier to list states that springfield has been in...

I'd imagine the ending sequence of the last Simpson having homer saying something like "Well everyone knows that we are in X" where X is some state. And Lisa saying "There's no city named springfield in X." Homer replying with a typical "D'oh!"

I was so eager to respond to this post!!! I totally know the answer!!! They live in Kentucky! I swear, they do! You know why? They revealed where they lived in a "Behind the Laughter" episode, kind of jeering the "Behind the Music" of the VH1 series. I know it doesn't make much sense because of the sea port and all, but that's what was revealed on the show. That's where they live, people!!!!! Hahahahahah! They live in Kentucky!!!!!!

I believe I heard that there is at least one Springfield in every state in the continental US. Of course, this could be wrong. But oh well.

These are all the cities named Springfield recognized by the Weather Channel's website:
 1. Springfield, Arkansas, United States
 2. Springfield, Colorado, United States
 3. Springfield, Georgia, United States
 4. Springfield, Idaho, United States
 5. Springfield, Illinois, United States
 6. Springfield, Kentucky, United States
 7. Springfield, Louisiana, United States
 8. Springfield, Maine, United States
 9. Springfield, Massachusetts, United States
 10. Springfield, Minnesota, United States
 11. Springfield, Missouri, United States
 12. Springfield, Nebraska, United States
 13. Springfield, New Hampshire, United States
 14. Springfield, New Jersey, United States
 15. Springfield, Ohio, United States
 16. Springfield, Oregon, United States
 17. Springfield, Pennsylvania, United States
 18. Springfield, South Carolina, United States
 19. Springfield, South Dakota, United States
 20. Springfield, Tennessee, United States
 21. Springfield, Vermont, United States
 22. Springfield, Virginia, United States
 23. Springfield, West Virginia, United States
 24. Springfield, Wisconsin, United States

So since on your page you only left Washington and Oregon as possibilities, and Washington apparantly doesn't have a Springfield, They must be in Oregon!

Like one episode where Marge is on the phone placing an order she says the address is "....... Springfield oh Hi Patty!" saying hello to her sister who just walked into the room stopping her from revealing the state. And there have been many other gags like that through the years.

Guess I should have looked at your page 1st I see you have this refrence.

From IMDB's trivia on The Simpsons:

The location of the fictitious town of Springfield is never revealed. Whenever they locate the town on a map, for instance, we never see the map. In the "Behind The Music" episode the State is mentioned but there are several versions of the show, each with a different state name (including Kentucky and Missouri), to keep the not-revealing-the-location-of-Springfield joke going.

Edit:

In one episode a letter to Mr. Burns from the Simpsons does not show the state the Simpsons live in, but reads Mr. Burns as living in Springfield, NJ

In the episode "A Tale of Two Springfields", Springfield is split into two area codes, 636 and 939. This would put half of Springfield in Missouri and the other half in Puerto Rico.

If ye recall a recent episode when the entire mob comes to springfield, and the mob is driving to springfield from the airport, you see a sign on the side of the road indicating that it is I-95
It's not kentucky, by that

I think New Jersey sounds most likely
(Remember the episode when they took a 2 day train ride to somewhere in delaware?)

Oregon.

First of all, in the Behind the Laughter episode they lived in North Kentucy, which isnt even a state.

As some of you noticed I have narrowed it down to Washington and Oregon, I guess since there is no Springfeild in Washington it must be Oregon, I had a feeling it was before I knew there was no Springfeild in Washington, had you noticed...

In a recent episode we find out the state flag is a beaver, no state has this flag however Oregon is known as the beaver state.
The beaver is also on the sheild in the courthouse
A lot of charactors in The Simpsons are named after streets in Oregon
Mat Groening was raised in Oregon

Hmm. No good. Only Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have a West Springfield. I wonder if either of those are the size of Texas and have oil rigs perfect for going to when your wife leaves you for her old high school flame?

Springfield Oregon seems possible, I checked out the city's Site and apperently they have a History Museum like in the Simpsons when Jebidiah Springfield turns out to be a pirate, which is uncovered by Lisa.

Since there is a Springfield in Kentucky and there is a Shelbyville (Springfield's nemesis), maybe it's Kentucky? Believe me, every other person around Shelbyville is like Cletus. [Big Grin]
