I recently switched to a much bigger highschool, and I chose computer engineering for one of my courses.
When I walked into the classroom, I was in awe... I saw heaven before me! I saw a classroom that was a freakin' warehouse of computer parts!
I mean rows and rows of monitors, endless boxes of RAM, joysticks, galore.
Best part is, he gives away any of it for *free*
repeat, *free*
1 GB of RAM coming onto my computer soon! [Big Grin]

In the class we learn programming, hacking, hardware stuff, how to write programs, and we build cars, and attach them to a program we've written, and make them move using our keyboard.

I am in heaven!

at my school we have computer apps (how to point and click) and AP computer science, but i hear that the latter doesn't exactly have computers yet. supposedly they learn JAVA and some basic C++, but no computer building stuff.
lucky you.

i took up to AP computer science, since it was a math class the teacher fought the system to get just twenty computers. She then pulled strings with some friends to get network access, and some more at MS to get windoze NT (the rest of the scool were 95/98 boxes). We did get to program though, and it was fun.

Where did your school get all those computer parts?

*deams* I wish we did that.
In my school I have just stated my GSCE course, which is the final two years of secondary school. In this year we get to choose 2 IT based subjects, so I took the hardest Applied ICT and BS. When we started the 'hard' lession the teacher talked for 2 hours about how to make simple slide shows in Publisher. Then we left. I cornered him at the end of the lesson and asked him if we were doing any computer building/HTML/C or at least using Linux. The 'head' of the department said something on the lines of "Linux is only good for big webservers and that HTML and C were," I quote " The nerdy show off way and that to use computers properly I should use M$ word for websites and that I shouldn't try and show off by coding it myself". I couldn't belive it. Anyway my english teacher was in the room at the time, he was going to ask me if I still wanted to buy a modem, anyway he went up to the teacher and said "Well, its the I]The nerdy show offs [/I]who make all the software for idiots like you" Which I thought was quite funny, anyway he's entering me for a programming course soon so thats a bit better...

Word for web publishing? MS should take that out of the program. Good lord. He probably doesn't go to any sites with java either does he.I mean realy who would say something like that? Showing off by going with notepad or the like instead of word. Bah. I would make a webpage in word that held the code for the page and turn that in in word =-). ha ha how funny. The big problem is thought that word would eff it up. whatever. Guy didn't know what he was talking about. And C being showoffy? what was that about? And now my rant about MS would go here but you guys all agree with me on that point. Linux is something I wish I had learned in highschool. would make my life now much easier.

Word is atrocious for making Web pages (2000+, anyway, Word 97 made rather simple, but cruddy looking pages). Your teacher is a *fool*. I do all my web pages with vim (:wq forever! [n.b. that would be a very poor command if extended past the 'q' [Wink] ]), using gVim on Windows. I did say "my" pages, as there is one site that I update as a courtesy to someone on a weekly basis, and it was generated with the aformentioned horrific M$ Word 2000, and the content is provided to me in a .doc file, so I use Frontpage on my work machine to update the page. I wrote a macro in Word to clean up all the crappy formatting this person puts in the source file, and then I just copy and paste the text over the old one. Someday I might actually redo the page, and make it template-friendly, and maybe I could use an open source Word->??? converter to read out the text, and make it so I can put it into a page with vi comfortably. Simply put, Word HTML scares me.

I like what FatGnome said about making the HTML the proper way, and then putting the code into Word [Smile] . This reminds me of a pet project I did many years ago - I used my Smith-Corona at home to make a nice test page, with all the letters & characters, scanned the mess in, and sliced the images. Back then, I was still using Windows exclusively (the year was ~1998), and so I hacked up a VB macro in Word to translate text into the filenames of the scanned images, along with the respective HTML. That was fun [Smile] . I need to revitalize that project, and maybe rescan the mess in, and do a proper job of it with perl [Wink] . I shouldn't have even thought of this - the idea is extremely compelling to me right now, and I'm already visualizing the wonder of said code [Smile] .

*sigh* It's 1700, and I'm just finishing my lunch now...I should leave this rant before I go way too far ^_~.

personally I would put all my HTML into the document then save as a TXT file and rename it. That would be considered "using word" I once made a small HTML document in Word 2000, it ended up being a 289Kb file. I made the same file with NS Composer and ended up at 30Kb, and 29Kb when I did it myself. I think you'll need Linux on your "Big Web Server" to host up all those huge pages you write. [Big Grin]

I have a class called "PC apps" that involves our teacher saying things to the effect of "I'm the stupidest person on the planet, here's some proof." The purpose of the class is to learn the difference between a word processor and a hard drive and how render your computer compleatly useless.

That sounds like a sweet class!!

Last year one of my friends took some computer class. One of their projects was to design a web page in FrontPage, when they started coding it in HTML, the teacher yelled at them and told them to do it in FrontPage. This is just one of the reasons I would never take a high school computer class, (among others).

You know a program is bad at creating HTML when the programmers at another company program a "Clean up Word HTML" function into their product (Dreamweaver). They should also have a "De-Frontpageize" function.

You committed the heinous crime of making the authority figure look bad.

Don't stress out over it, whatever you do. School is finite in duration, and when you escape, you'll find that there are people outside of academia who actually want you to be smart, and will pay you for it.
