For any oldies out there that don't understand 133t5p33k, The Straight Dope tells you probably more than you want to know. But if you'd like more, Wikipedia has more. Now when the k3w1 h4x0r5 post, you'll understand. I don't really want to, but then I'm old and not a b4k4. [Wink]

Read it. Now I get it. And now I get how pointless it all is. [Razz]

Like I have enough time to purposefully overcomplicate word processing ?! [Eek!]

I think the next big think in secrecy will be ink on paper. But, ssshhhh, don't tell anyone. [Wink]

Crypto is to leet as enigma is to pig latin.

Say you were writing something on this board that included a word that your office/library/school web filter wouldn't let through. Let's say is about sex or hacking or something. You might instead write "exsay" or "ackinghay", but a pig latin plugin for the web filter wouldn't be too difficult to write. So instead you write using symbols that in combination vaguely look like the correct letters. Add some mispronounciation and you have a way to talk about a controversial topic in an anally filtered environment without everyone knowing a set of predifined codewords. And it won't come up in searches, unless the searcher searches leetly.

Still, it is a pain in the butt to read and write and it is very much overused.

I don't want to know any more than is obvious.

Now when the k3w1 h4x0r5 post, you'll understand.

I see no point in trying. When they can deliver systems of a few hundred K lines of code that run in production for years, then they can think of themselves as elite.

The most productive use I have found for "leet-speak" is passwords. I have my users make passwords using numbers instead of vowels, etc. that way they get something they can remember, but still meets the policy.
