Hi all. What's up? Haven't visited in this forum for long, but I still read JoT very regularly. It rocks.

The people in my building voted for shutting down the central water heating system (because it's too expensive and also encourages water spending). It means that every apartment has to install individual water heating solution.

So right now, the water heating system operates until it runs out of diesel fuel, which should happen any day now. Anyone who doesn't get individual water heating by then will be forced to take cold showers. And the winter has just started..

For some reason, it reminded me of the .mac comic from years ago. So I tried to use that drawing for an hand-made warning sign.

You can see the result here. The distances got messed up a bit.

The text says:
The central water heating system may stop working any day now!
Are you ready?

And the girl says: "Mommy! Daddy! I don't want to be left out with no hot water!"

I even gave a link to the original page in that drawing. [Smile]

Hi Retropier - sorry to hear you are having individual water heating arrangements forced on you - small localised combined heat and power (CHP) systems are the green way forward.

Still - you have posted a cartoon which appears to be captioned in Hebrew. I cannot read Hebrew.
Please continue to post cartoons captioned in Hebrew, as my ignorance is my problem and your contribution to the forums is welcomed. [Wink]

And here I was, about to congratulate Retropier for being the only person in the known universe with worse handwriting than myself. [Wink]

Greetings Retropier, and welcome.

btw - after the first few weeks, you get used to cold showers, and they're a real time-saver, as you find out just how fast a shower can be.

And why wasn't the solution to install flow meters in the pipes enetering each apartment?. At the end of each month / or year / you sum the the total water volume used in the building and divide by each individual apartment's water volume. Then each apartment pays the cost times this fraction. Large systems are usually much more efficient than many small systems.

(water volume apartment/water volume building)*total cost water building = cost to apartment

____ Retropier, Depending on the amount of dissolved solids in your water supply. It may be expedient to put in several small point of use heaters through out your unit. For small use age they should be more energy efficient than the losses in long pipe runs. In our house there is fifty feet of line from the water heater to the master bath, takes a long time to get hot water to the end, then the water in the line cools off.

____ Yes Landlords and Co-ops sometimes make stupid choices.

I saw that the wonderful ripoff I drew was ripped off from the wall. Barbarians. [Frown] Luckily I took a picture of it before hanging it.

Grummash: You did see I provided translation in the post, right?

Ashitaka: The building has 17 apartments. Installing all those flow meters will require having someone measure them all and issue bills. I don't think anyone would want to volunteer (but kudos for understanding that problem about water spending!)

TheMoMan: My apartment is tiny (1.5 rooms). I would never have this problem.

____ Retropier, At one time Fiat built and sold Gensets that output Electricity, & Hot water. They were sold for apartment buildings. The Hot water was sold to the residents, and the excess Electricity was sold to the local power company, over all they lowered the Landlords costs.

Retropier - yes, I saw the translation... it was very helpful and I am grateful for that.

But I still want you to post cartoons captioned in Hebrew if that is your thing - I am just a very pro-diversity kinda guy. [Beard of Peter Gabriel!]
