I already have an iPod Nano (3rd-gen), which I've been quite happy with. Now Sabrina, my lady love, wants to take it a step further.

When she came to live with me, as I use my cellphone for all "phone" needs these days, I set up the Family Talk account with AT&T (the carrier I've been with since they were AT&T before they were Cingular) and got her a Nokia flip phone similar to my own, but a little newer. It's worked out for her well over the past year...but now...

She wants an iPhone.

See, she already wanted an iPod, and she also wanted a phone better for text-messaging and Internet than the Nokia. Instant best-of-both-worlds solution! [Smile]

Fortunately, we're already on AT&T, so that's half the battle right there. Her account will be eligible for the full discounted pricing on an iPhone in August. So that's probably when we'll do it, and I'll probably spring for the 16 Gb 3GS.

Then, if she absolutely hates the living frak out of the thing, I'll know to give it a miss. But, if she likes it, I'll pull my own upgrade trigger the following month. (Technically, I could do it now, but we'll let her go first. That way, she stays happier, and I look good for being generous. [Smile] )

Besides just waiting until I can buy the phone, and until we get the discount, by then, AT&T will probably have straightened out the kinks in their support (with MMS and the like), and the hype will have settled down a bit.

Anyone see anything wrong with this plan? Are there caveats I should know about in gifting Sabrina with The Most Advanced Phone In The Known Universe(R)(C)(tm)?

She is going to love it. My iPhone is an essential tool/communicator/tricorder/navigator/Google in my pocket/camera/entertainment system/security blanket.

And the App Store is gravy on the gravy... absolutely friggin' fantastic.

Except when they reject your app. [Frown]

Erbo -

That sounds like a good plan and, if I'm honest, one which I can see making everyone happy.......

..... right up until the point where Sabrina reads your plan on Geek Culture ........

She already knows about it. We've discussed this. I just read her the posts on this thread up to now, and she is officially laughing her ass off. She especially liked Snaggy's comment.

Have you considered an Android phone? Ok, arguably less (though I'd say differently) stylish, but IMO with cleverer and more usable software? Plus it'll cost you less!

A friend of mine who works for Google was given one for free. Went straight back to his iPhone [Smile]

One of my coworkers has one. It's nifty, and, if AT&T had one on offer, I'd certainly consider it. But AT&T doesn't sell Android phones; they sell iPhones. Oh well.

(On the other hand, my boss has an iPhone, which he appreciates. And another of my coworkers just got a 3GS...and my boss is jealous. [Smile] )

Change of plan...we will probably both upgrade our phones on August 15. This is because I think my plan accounts with AT&T didn't get set up quite the way I wanted when I established Sabrina under my account last year and got her initial phone, and I've probably been paying more than I should have. If I'm reading it right, we may actually wind up paying slightly less for iPhone service than I've been paying up to now. Switching them both at the same time should allow us to get AT&T to set us up correctly from the get-go.

Sabrina is in fact eligible for the full iPhone subsidy/discount as of yesterday (confirmed via AT&T's Web site). We will likely both get 32Gb 3GS units, in black.

For my part, I will be replacing three discrete devices with the iPhone: my current Nokia phone, my iPod Nano 3rd-gen, and my watch/WristPDA (which is wearing its band out and needs to be charged daily at this point). I've been researching which apps I will need to replace the major functions I use the phone and WristPDA for. The total cost will be surprisingly little at this point.

I'm also researching how I can "port" the custom MP3 ringtones I've made for the Nokias to the iPhones. There seems to be a way to do so, if I've read several articles correctly.

And the seventh angel poured forth his bowl, and a voice cried out from heaven, saying, "It is done."

We have them.

Sabrina is in hog heaven right now. And I'm remembering that I inherited my grandfather's gadget-junkie gene. [Big Grin]

Best damn $700 I ever dropped in one day...

Erbo,

If you can link those articles for the ringtones, I would be most grateful.

Work decided to furnish new iPhones for us, so I am no longer on my Blackberry. But right now, the whole iTunes things is just pissing me off.

I would give it back to them if it wasn't for the fact that I used to pay for my own cell plan. So it is nice to no longer pay the extra 70 a month.

I forget just where exactly I read how to do it, but the technique is simple enough that I can just describe it here.

Using Audacity or a similar audio-editing program, edit down the section of the song that you want to use as a ringtone (30 seconds or less, or thereabouts) and export that as an MP3 file. Then convert the exported MP3 file to M4A format; I use a program called "Agree Free MP3-to-M4A AAC Converter" to do so.

Now, in Windows Explorer, rename the .m4a file so it has a ".m4r" extension. (You'll have to turn off "Hide file extensions for known file types" to do this, and Windows will still give you an "Are you sure you want to do this?" prompt.) At this point, it is now a "ringtone" file.

iTunes will not directly import the file by drag-and-drop, but, if you right-click the file in Windows Explorer and select "Play" from the context menu, iTunes will slot it right in to the "Ringtones" folder and play it. You can then fix the artist-and-title info in iTunes before syncing it across to your iPhone.

That's pretty much it. Happy ringtone-ing!
