____ Where to begin, Okay I despise the whole idea of Black Friday, The Mrs and myself if we need something we go buy it, sale or not. Any way this Friday The step-son and his wife talked the Mrs into going to the big box store that uses a SMILEY as a Logo. Bad idea the items the Mrs wanted were sold out. I had nothing to get, I just was the driver and Payer. We get through the casher no problems, then at the door a greeter wants to inspect our purchases, and compare them to the receipt, no problem, with him then another, at the third one I asked for a MANAGER, and declared arrest me or let me leave. Keep your damn junk I do not want it at this point. Call the cops or let me leave.

____ Your thoughts?

I treat that day as "Buy Nothing Day." I share your disgust for the idea of Black Friday. (The idea of consumers celebrating companies becoming profitable is absurd to me. Furthermore, at virtually closeout prices, I find it hard to believe that there's actual money to be made.)

Also, I never shop at that particular establishment. Just seems a little too evil for my tastes.

P.S. Snaggy: I suspect the clock on the GC server is a wee bit off...

THAt big box store has a sister chain that has a name that rhymes with hams.

My parents always went shopping there ( can't beat theier price on things as long as you want to buy lots of it. It is a great store to buy food at for a growing teenage boy.

anyways, every time you leave that store, since the early 90's at least, you have to have your reciept checked agaist the items you have. no problem, I I would think you wouldn't have had your problem if the employees that day were following company procedure. after the recipet is checked, it is initialled. anouther reciept checked should see this and lets you pass.

____ They lost me, It is like the second and third were hired to make sure the first did their job. It may stop losses at the door, but if it turns off enough shoppers they will not have a loss problem, no customers no losses!!

____ The first did mark the cash register ribbon, as did #2 and #3.

____ I do believe we are talking about the chain from Bentonville Arkansaw. I am not going back...

____ I heard this weekend that the state did a study that showed the percentages of the money spent at National chains and in state chains, the money that was spent at local stores was more than double

The equivalent to 'Black Friday' here in oz is the Boxing Day Sales, people queue up for hours before the shops open to be the first in to get the 'great bargains'.

I've only done it once, and was fairly unimpressed.

Prices were lower, but not enough lower to justify getting out of bed before dawn on a public holiday, and usually about the same as you'd get on a normal day if you're a ruthless haggler like me.

As for the people on the door (calling them 'greeters' seems odd if they're checking your gear as you leave) I'd do what TheMoMan did, being checked once is fair enough, checking 3 times is taking the piss.

MoMan: Interesting bit about 'losses' and receipt checking. It may not always be about 'you' being the crook, but rather about 'sweethearting' by the cashier. I'm pretty sure this is more than half of the reason why you get hassled, because it always strikes me as novel that when I occasionally window shop at Best Buy, and walk out with nothing, no one gives me any trouble. That might sound silly, but as per your experience above, I'm just dreading someone saying "Sir, sir, we'd like to look in your bag." (i.e. my reasonably spacious briefcase) That would piss off the civil liberties guy in me, and the fact that it has never happened makes me think that it has less to do with shoplifting than one would imagine.

Still, there's no excuse for what happened, and I think you should complain to Corporate. Obviously, I'm sure you have your duly autographed receipt, and if you sent a copy of it, along with many of your remarks above, I think they ought to throw you a bone for your troubles...or at least rip their 'greeters' (and/or greeters' boss) a new one.

P.S. If you do attempt to contact them, document everything, and if you don't get a satisfactory response, write to The Consumerist.

I agree, I bet you could get a 50 USD gift cert. for your hassle. As long as you don't feel bad about milking the corporate machine that is.

____ Dman & Ash, While you both agree on a good point, To me Friday was the tipping point, I have had other problems with that store and have pushed those issues before to corporate, I'm done with them .

I don't do Black Friday or the smiley store. My friend, Rachel, got hit in the head by a lady. She evidently thought Rach wasn't moving fast enough down the aisle and hauled off and hit her in the head with her purse. A manager saw and had the lady expelled. I think Rach should have called the cops though.
