Here's an internet spelling test. Good for folks who have problems with your and you're, there and they're etc.

Yay for me. I am proud. So proud. I scored 15/15. I'm shocked that the average is 12.9. Whoa. [Eek!] That's pretty basic stuff.

So who's going to organize the parade in my honor?

Come on now... I can only interview one volunteer at a time...

That *is* a tad basic. I think that most of the people who make mistakes on that are probably caught out by the apostrophes.

Maybe the sample size is small. The average score was 13.7 after I got my 15/15.

That said, it's sad how many college educated people I know who are confused by the simplistic things on that test.

That quiz was total shit. It was composed by a moron. There were a host of grammatical errors in the so-called answers themselves.

I'd very much like to try a proper test: i.e., one that examines one's use of punctuation as well as semantic grasp... ennit.

You got 15 answers right out of 15.
Your score is above the average score of 13.8 out of 15.
Please feel free to post anytime.

Smart people are trying it now. =P

But really...just about anyone should be able to do that - where's the challenge? Also, the capitali[z|s]ation?

When I first did it the average score was in the high 12s.

I scored a 15, naturally. [Wink]

I found the first question really really hard at first... then I realized that using an 8 point font as a default on a 1920x1200 display was, perhaps, not the way to take a test that involves being able to read things on the screen.

(15/15, incidentally)

Aye, I had the same problem (21", 1600X1200 8 point).
Luckily it was a simple as Ctrl+Scroll-Wheel-Down

15/15

Great score! Check below to see your answers.

I feel so stupid and illiterate now. I feel that I must protest, however, as, out of the two that I missed, one of them was because I misread a word.

I'm going to go hit some rocks with a stick. [Frown]

I have a *slight* feeling the program *adjusts* the average score to make you feel better about yourself, unless alot of illiterate people have taken this test in between mine (which said 13.9) to when you took it.

Got 15 out of 15 too. Not bad for an English-as-second-langage person! (Or maybe that's because English _is_ my second language and possessives can't be mistaken for plurals in French.)

I bet the test was written by someone who read too many of these mistakes on a forum or something... [crazy]

Nah, The average is still 11.9, and I got 15. Looks like there are a lot of illiterate people out there. Perhaps you guys have been fudging your results? [Wink]

The average when I took it was 10.9, so I imagine more morons took it in the meanwhile.

Of course it's basic, but I saw each and every mistake my students make (including the "lead" vs "led" in past tense, and "loose" vs. "lose," "effect" and "affect," etc.).

I think that next time I teach ENG101, I'll print out that quiz and give it to them as part of the diagnostic.

I guess what annoyed me is that the punctuation (or lack thereof) in some sentences was a bit awkward.

I love the fact that "privileges" was misspelled in the intro, and "done" makes me think of turkeys baking in the oven. "Finished" would have been a better word choice. [Razz]
